Purifying our air is not something I have ever given too much thought to. I mean, our home couldn’t possibly be that bad! Sure, we have three cats, a wood fireplace, and no vent in the kitchen for cooking, but how much do those really affect our domestic atmosphere? It wasn’t until we brought home our daughter that I started to concern myself with the air quality in our home. So when I saw Clorox had a no-frills air purifier that could tackle rooms up to 1500 square feet, I took the leap to see if it would make a difference.

Unboxing and First Impressions

When I first opened the box, I was surprised to see that there was just one piece in it: the purifier. There weren’t any extra parts to put together or fancy accessories we needed to buy or add to the overall product. The only additional product in the box was, of course, the plug.

My first impression of the product was how incredibly light it was — about 12 pounds. I was able to pull it out of the box with no issue. I also loved the sleek design. Its white color works well with our home aesthetic, so the purifier doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. I placed it next to the TV stand, and it looked great.

My favorite thing about the air purifier is that it strikes a great balance between decent features and being relatively user-friendly. The Clorox Purifier has a smart touchscreen from which you can access all control options.

Filter

The filter features a 3-stage 360º purification. The pre-filter catches large dust particles and pet hair. The true HEPA filter captures 99.7% of allergens and particles. Lastly, the active carbon filter reduces odors to keep the room smelling fresh.

Air Quality Feedback

The front of the air purifier features a light that displays the quality of the air in the room. The colors range from green, which means good air quality, to dark red, which means hazardous. Some colors you may find in between are yellow, orange, red, and purple.

Auto Mode

I was most excited about this feature. When you choose this option, the purifier will automatically adjust to the ideal fan speed in response to changes in the room’s air quality, which is detected by the air quality sensor.

Testing

The Clorox Air Purifier was tested using several specific factors, such as setup, performance, noise level, and maintenance. I tested the purifier for two weeks using various scenarios, like a smelly dinner or lighting our fireplace. Here’s how the testing went.

Setup and Installation

The Clorox Air Purifier was incredibly easy to set up and install. Once I pulled it out of the box and plugged it in, it was ready to go. All I had to do was press the power button, and it started to work. I kept it on Auto mode because it made the most sense for my life—I wanted to set it and forget it.

Performance

This is obviously the most important factor when testing an air purifier. It’s crucial that it does what it advertises, which is to purify the air. I didn’t have any scientific method to test the air quality, but I used my subjective observations and the air purifier numbers.

When I turned on the air purifier, the sensor lit up green, which means our air quality is excellent the way it is. My first thought was, does this even really work? Will it just always say it’s “good air”? Well, I was able to put that to the test two days later when my husband cooked up some brats on the stove. The house got smoky (and smelly) quickly. When I checked the air purifier, the sensor was lit in purple, indicating the air quality was borderline hazardous. I could hear the fan ramp up to help clear the air. Much to my surprise, it did speed up the process of removing the stench in the air, and about 45 minutes later, the sensor returned to green.

Another scenario I wanted to test was how it would perform when we lit our fireplace. Since we have a natural wood fireplace, sometimes it can get smoky if the vent if the chimney isn’t open enough. I didn’t care when we first moved in, but now with our infant daughter, I want to ensure our air quality is good for her little lungs. Shortly after lighting the fireplace, the sensor changed. This is probably because it’s about three feet away from the fireplace. After using the fireplace for about thirty minutes, I could confidently say that the air purifier did keep the smoke at bay.

The last thing I noticed, my favorite feature so far, is how little cat hair I saw lingering around the floor between vacuuming days. The top layer of the filter works at keeping the dust and pet hair at bay, and after a few days of use, I started to notice significantly less of both around the room. This is a feature I will especially appreciate when my daughter starts to crawl.

Noise Level

Testing the noise level was easy. The air purifier claims to have noise levels of 30 dB. This is between rustling leaves and a refrigerator hum. Throughout the day, I never heard it running. There were times when I had gone up to check if it was on. However, when the air quality is poor, you can definitely hear the fan more, though it’s still not that loud. It sounds like the fan of a laptop that is overheating: Quite subtle and certainly not loud enough to bother anyone.

Maintenance

Since I just got the air purifier, I haven’t had to do any maintenance. However, I can tell it would be pretty easy to take care of. The brand mentions replacing the filter every six to twelve months, and I’m sure this depends on the level of dust, dander, and regular allergens the purifier has to tackle.

Replacing the filter is easy. You do have to order replacements online separately, which can be a bit of a nuisance. However, replacing the filter is simple. Turn the air purifier over and open the cover. You can remove the used filter, replace it with a new one, and close the cover. That’s all!

Smart Features and Controls

As I mentioned, the auto function is one of the smartest features of the air purifier. Auto mode will automatically adjust to the ideal fan speed in response to changes in the room’s air quality, which is detected by the air quality sensor. If you don’t want to choose auto mode, you can still change the fan speed with four options.

Another feature I love is the timer, which allows you to set the air purifier to run for a specific amount of time if you don’t want it running all day. Despite being energy efficient, it still uses electricity, which will increase your bill. According to the brand, you can expect an annual increase of around $2.80 a month or $33.64. It’s not much, but it’s important to note. This is where a timer could be beneficial if you don’t feel the need to have it running all day. I find the auto mode the most efficient as it won’t have to work overtime if I turn it back on and the air quality is poor.
