Google’s Pixel 10 Pro XL Is An Often-Overlooked Premium Smartphone, But It Shouldn’t Be

Several of the most popular and powerful Android smartphone options are in the Samsung Galaxy lineup. That said, one line of cutting-edge Android phones that many consumers often overlook comes directly from Google, the company that created the Android operating system. On August 28, 2025, Google released several new Google Pixel smartphones, including its flagship model, the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL.

This phone combines impressive and high-end technology (like a 6.8-inch Super Actua OLED display and the Google Tensor G5 processor), bundled with the capabilities of Android 16, and the AI-driven power of Google Gemini. The phone’s advanced camera setup and extended battery life are among its other noteworthy features.

As you’d expect, the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is supported by all of the popular cellular service providers, including AT&T Wireless, which generously provided me with a review unit of this phone to test.

Having previously reviewed several older iterations of the Google Pixel phones, I was not at all surprised that this one offers many impressive features. It’s also highly customizable, and designed for users who rely heavily on their smartphone as a communications, productivity, safety, health/fitness, entertainment, and organization tool.

Google Pixel 10 Pro XL Overview

If you’ve already determined you prefer an Android phone instead of an Apple iPhone, the next decision is the size and design of the phone you want. There are Android phones that fold, flip, and that come in a variety of sizes.

The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL offers a traditional, rectangular design with a 6.8-inch OLED touchscreen, single camera on the front, and a set of three cameras on the back of the device. Not only does the display offer a high resolution (1,344 by 2,992 pixels), it’s also bright and able to display more than 16 million colors.

The battery life of the phone averages around 24 hours (less, based on how it’s used), but can be extended up to 100 hours in Extreme Battery Saver mode. Using the integrated fast charging feature, the phone’s battery can be replenished from zero to 70% in about 30 minutes using a USB Type-C cable and 45-watt power adapter. Wireless charging is also an option.

Since this phone runs Android 16 (or later), all the latest Gemini AI tools and features are integrated into the operating system and many of the Google apps and services that run seamlessly on this phone.

In addition to the Circle to Search feature that allows users to learn more about anything displayed on the phone’s screen simply by drawing a circle around it, this phone can record, transcribe, and summarize calls, meetings, and in-person conversations, plus handle real-time translations.

When it comes to wireless communication, you get 5G cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth v6 functionality, support for NFC and Google Cast, plus dual band GNSS, GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo for accurate navigation and location services.

Who Will the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL Appeal To?

The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is designed for people who rely heavily on their smartphone in their everyday personal and professional life. Between the integrated Gemini AI functions and its customization options, the phone can easily adapt to almost anyone’s needs and lifestyle. 

Anyone who wants a reliable and durable smartphone with a large display and all-day battery life will appreciate what this phone offers. And, of course, the selection of apps that come preinstalled on the device is just the beginning: Adding apps from the Google Play Store to further customize and expand the phone’s capabilities is a straightforward process and there are literally millions of optional apps to choose from.

Integrated Google Gemini AI, Google Apps, and Google Services

Like all the latest Android smartphones, the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL comes with all the popular Google apps and services preinstalled. These include Google Maps, Chrome, Gmail, Gemini, Calendar, Meet, Messages, News, Photos, Google Drive, Google Wallet, Google Translate, Recorder, and FitBit.

As a result, if you’re upgrading from an older Android phone to this one, or you already use Google apps and services, as soon as you sign into your Google account on the new phone, all of your app-specific data syncs automatically.

There are several ways to access the Gemini AI tools, including from within apps, from the phone’s Lock screen or Home screen, or using voice commands. More than ever before, the apps that support Gemini can handle or streamline many tasks on your behalf, share data between apps seamlessly, and at times, even make decisions for you that can save you time.

For example, the Recorder app allows you to record any audio and have the phone create real-time text transcriptions, which can then be automatically summarized.

Extensive Safety, Privacy, and Security Features

The Pixel 10 Pro XL offers a handful of powerful, yet simple to use safety, privacy, and security features. It starts with an integrated fingerprint sensor and face recognition, either of which can be used to unlock the phone and approve online purchases. A customized pattern, PIN code, or password can be set up.

Also built into the phone is a free virtual private network (VPN by Google) that’s used to enhance privacy and security when accessing the internet from a public or unsecured Wi-Fi hotspot.

The built in Google Titan M2 security chip also uses a variety of hardware-based features to enhance the phone’s end-to-end security. The phone includes anti-malware and anti-phishing protection, plus spam and scam protection when using the Pixel 10 Pro XL as a phone or for messaging.

I discovered that the phone’s built in safety features are also impressive. These include Satellite SOS, Emergency SOS, crisis alerts, car crash detection, emergency location service, emergency contacts and medical info, an earthquake alert system, crisis alerts, and theft protection.

Additional safety, privacy, and security features can be added using optional apps and services, but what’s included for free already exceeds what most other Android phones offer.

Experience Premium Picture Taking and Video Shooting Capabilities

What I discovered is that the Camera and Google Photos apps give users far more creative control over their picture-taking or video-shooting process than ever before, but dramatically simplifies these tasks. Some of my favorite AI-driven Camera app features include Pro Controls, Camera Coach, and Auto Best Take.

The real magic happens when using the AI-driven photo and video editing and enhancement tools integrated into Google Photos.

These tools have become even easier to use, yet provide more advanced power to handle editing tasks more efficiently, doing things that until recently were impossible from a smartphone. Tools like Face Unblur, Auto Unblur, Real Tone, and Macro Focus help to ensure your photos and video clips are crystal clear and utilize the ambient light in the most efficient ways possible.

There are also shooting modes that take the guesswork out of specialty photography or videography, whether you’re taking selfies, portraits, shooting panoramic images, taking pictures at night (or in low light), taking advantage of long exposure, or capturing the night sky with the Astrophotography mode.

Other photo or video editing tools nicely utilize AI to allow for photos to be reframed or reimagined. My favorite tool is Magic Eraser. With it, you can remove unwanted objects from photos. I also love how easy it is to resize or move subjects within an image after it’s been taken. These are features that are far more advanced than what’s available using iOS 26 on even the latest iPhone 17 Pro models.

The camera setup built into the phone itself is impressive, but not up to par with Samsung’s top-of-the-line Galaxy S25 Ultra. That said, you get a rear triple camera system that includes a 50MP wide lens with an 82-degree field of view, a 48MP ultrawide lens with macro focus and a 120-degree field of view, and a 48MP telephoto lens with a 22-degree field of view.

The optical zoom capabilities of these cameras is 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x, or 10x, but with the Pro Res Zoom feature, up to 100x digital zoom is possible.

All of the phone’s rear cameras offer optical and electric image stabilization, and a multi-zone LDAF (laser detect auto focus) sensor helps to ensure your images and video clips are as sharp and detailed as possible. Meanwhile, the single front-facing camera offers 42MP resolution with a 103-degree field of view. 

The phone’s cameras, when controlled using the AI-driven Camera app, can generate consistent pro-quality results, whether shooting still images or video at up to 8K (30 fps) that’s accompanied by stereo audio.

In other words, for the average user, the photo and video capabilities built into the Google Pixel 10 XL Pro are beyond impressive and versatile, regardless of the shooting situation.

My Final Thoughts: Is the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL Smartphone Worth It?

For someone with a high smartphone budget who’s seeking superior all-around functionality and what’s currently the best smartphone camera setup in existence, you can’t go wrong with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (starting price: $1,300). But, if you’re a power user who wants to experience the very best of what Android has to offer, the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is probably the powerful and versatile phone you want in your hands.

Whether you’re using it as a communications, productivity, health/fitness, organizational, photography/videography, language translation, audio recording and transcription, or entertainment tool, the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is nicely equipped to handle these and other advanced tasks. 

The phone itself is comfortable to hold, plus the display is bright and responsive. In fact, I discovered that photos and videos (including movies streamed via Netflix, for example), look fantastic. Meanwhile, the customization options offered by Android (combined with Gemini) ensure that the apps, information, and data you need are always at your disposal.
