Think micro cassette dictation recorder from the 1980s and 1990s, but with a high-tech twist and no need for physical micro cassette tapes. It’s manufactured and sold by a Chinese company that refers to itself as a ‘global AI leader.’
At the same time as a recording is being made, the iFlyTek Smart Recorder creates text-based transcriptions of those recordings, which can then be transferred to a computer. This transcription process is done in real-time, without requiring internet access. In addition to using AI, the recorder relies on four built-in omni-directional microphones and two directional microphones to capture clear audio, which gets stored using the device’s 32GB of internal storage (which is not expandable).
As someone who has been reviewing consumer tech products for more than 30 years, in the past several, I‘ve tested several smartphones and other stand-alone devices that are able to record audio and then create text transcriptions. Some also allow for smartphone calls to be recorded, transcribed, and even summarized. When I started seeing an abundance of online ads for the iFlyTek Smart Recorder on social media, I was curious to see if this device actually works, so I ordered one from Amazon. It arrived the following day (thanks to Amazon Prime), and I started using it. Keep reading to discover if this particular device is worth the $229.99 investment.

iFlyTek Smart Recorder: Who Will This Device Appeal To?
The iFlyTek Smart Recorder will appeal to a business person or student who attends meetings, classes, or lectures, someone who regularly conducts in-person interviews, or anyone who needs to record conversations with people in the same room. The biggest perks of this device are its intuitive design and user interface, along with its ability to do offline transcription in near real-time.
The iFlyTek Smart Recorder Isn’t a Perfect Solution for Some Users
After using the iFlyTek Smart Recorder for a few days, I noticed a few rather significant drawbacks to an otherwise well-designed device. First, there’s no way to easily record a phone conversation, unless you use a speakerphone and hold the recorder up to the phone’s speaker. Second, there’s no super-simple way to transfer recordings and transcriptions from the recorder to a computer or mobile device.
Another drawback is that while the device itself does off-line transcription, it does not create summaries of the transcripts, which is an extremely handy feature offered by other devices and smartphones designed to handle similar applications. If you want to create a summary of the text or recording, you’ll need to rely on an independent AI tool, such as Google Gemini or Microsoft Copilot.
As for the accuracy of the AI transcription, I had very mixed results. First, I tried playing a video of JFK’s “We Choose to Go to the Moon” speech from 1962 and have the iFlyTek device record and transcribe the speech from what was a clear sounding video. The accuracy of the transcription was extremely poor.

Next, I tried speaking for one minute into the recorder to measure its accuracy. This time, the transcription was about 90% accurate, but only after I had the device re-transcribe the audio, which is a feature you can activate after a recording is completed. For someone who needs transcripts of recordings that are consistently highly accurate, this may not be the device for you.
The instruction manual that comes with the recorder is little more than a booklet containing the most basic information. Additional instructions can be found on the company’s website. Based on my experience, getting the recorder to perform at peak efficiency required a bit of trial and error work on my part, as well as the need to manually update the recorder’s integrated software. The lack of a dedicated computer and mobile app for the device is a definite drawback. This is something many competing devices offer.
The Audio Recording and Transcription Process
Once the iFlyTek Smart Recorder is charged and initially set up, you can begin recording and transcribing audio simply by pressing the Record button to start and stop the recording and automatic transcription process. Unlike similar devices, this one stands out because all of the transcription is done offline directly on the device. The recorder can also transcribe speech being recorded in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian, but the device does not translate from one language to another.
At the start of the recording process, you can choose between four recording modes — Intelligent (for general recordings), Meeting, Lecture, and Interview. To achieve the most accurate transcriptions and highest quality recordings possible, it’s important to choose the best mode for the recording situation. This ensures the recorder uses the appropriate built in microphones. Also, make sure the device has enough battery power to keep itself running for the duration of time you need it to record. This is information that’s displayed on the touchscreen.
Since the recorder itself does not offer internet access, when it’s connected to your computer via the supplied USB cable, periodically check to see if there are any System Upgrades or updated Language Packages available. Having the latest firmware and transcription data installed on the device helps to enhance its accuracy and overall performance. This option can be selected from the recorder’s on-screen Settings menu.
How to Transfer Your Recordings From the Device To Your Computer
Another drawback to this device is that when you connect it to your Windows computer via the supplied USB cable, the iFlyTek Smart Recorder is identified as an external flash drive, allowing you to see and then copy/transfer files from the recorder to your computer. You then need to use your own app(s) to access, view, and work with the text-based transcriptions and separate audio files. If you want a summary of a transcription, this is something you’ll need to rely on your computer’s integrated AI (such as Microsoft CoPilot or Google Gemini) to handle.
To transfer content from the iFlyTek Smart Recorder to a MacBook or iMac, you first need to download and install onto your Mac the free Android File Transfer app. Then, when you connect the recorder to your computer via a USB cable, you can copy/transfer the files from the recorder to your computer. Once again, there’s no dedicated app to help you work with the relevant files once they’re on your computer.
My Final Thoughts: Is the iFlyTek Smart Recorder Worth It?
If all you need to do is record audio and have the recordings transcribed into text, the iFlyTek Smart Recorder does its job. However, there are a handful of lower cost products available that handle these tasks and more, and that are supported by a dedicated app that makes transferring and working with recordings and transcriptions far easier. For example, I’m a big fan of the Plaud Note ($159), which works extremely well in conjunction with a smartphone. It offers more accurate transcription (based on my experience), allows for smartphone calls to be recorded and transcribed, and the device provides useful and accurate text-based summaries. Overall, I found the Plaud Note to be more reliable than the iFlyTek Smart Recorder.

For users of Samsung Galaxy smartphones that offer integrated Galaxy AI, Android phones that have Google Gemini support, and Windows computers with Microsoft CoPilot integration, you already have the ability to record and transcribe content, create summaries of transcripts, and work with both the text and audio recordings captured by your equipment, so there’s no need to invest in an iFlyTek Smart Recorder or similar device.
Based on my experience using the iFlyTek Smart Recorder, I found it performs adequately and can handle the tasks it’s promoted as offering. That said, I was under-impressed by the accuracy of the transcriptions. If you choose to purchase this device, wait for it to go on sale — either on the company’s own website or on Amazon, since it offers a much better value when it’s priced under $200. Ultimately, it did not meet my expectations when it comes to overall performance, but some people may find the iFlyTek Smart Recorder useful.
