The Plaud Note Uses AI to Accurately Record, Transcribe, and Summarize Audio: My Hands-On Review

The Plaud Note can make note taking during meetings, classes, interviews, phone calls, or in-person discussions a thing of the past. The device is slightly thicker, but otherwise the same size as a typical credit card. It has integrated microphones, a long rechargeable battery life, and enough storage to hold many hours worth of audio recordings. What I recently discovered is that this isn’t just a run-of-the-mill digital audio recorder.

When it’s paired with an Apple iPhone and used with a proprietary app, for example, recorded audio files are transferred to the phone where they can be quickly and accurately transcribed into text documents using the latest AI tools. You can also get summaries or mind maps of the recordings, which can then be shared and archived in the cloud. 

I was pleasantly surprised that the transcription technology recognizes 112 languages. Plus, using an included MagSafe case, the Plaud Note attaches to the back of an iPhone and can be used to record, transcribe, and summarize phone calls with a single touch of a button.

The folks at Plaud provided me with a Plaud Note device, along with the MagSafe compatible case, and a Starter transcription plan so that I could thoroughly test out the device in my everyday life as a journalist. I wound up using it to record press conferences, in-person interviews, and phone interviews. It didn’t take more than a few minutes to realize the Plaud Note could be a time saving productivity tool.

Use the Plaud Note to Boost Your Productivity

The Plaud Note offers plenty of versatility in terms of how it can be used. You can hold it in your hand to record an in-person conversation or interview, place it on a table to record a meeting or lecture, or attach it to the back of a smartphone to record phone calls. The integrated microphone system records clear audio.

Using the Plaud iPhone, Android, or web-based app, you can:

• Listen back to your original full-length recordings.
• Have the app use AI to create an edited version of the recording that removes silent gaps.
• Use AI to create a text-based transcription of the entire recording.
• Generate a text-based summary of a recording.
• Produce a colorful mind map that shows key pieces of information from the recording in a visual format.

I found using the Plaud app is highly intuitive. You can work with the audio or text-based content in a variety of ways to best adhere to your workflow. Ultimately, Plaud Note can save you time and help you keep your recordings, transcriptions, and related content well organized and easily accessible. 

For example, you can record a one hour meeting and then read the text-based summary of key points in just one to two minutes. All content created or stored within the Plaud app can easily be shared with others, plus it gets securely backed up automatically online, within your free Plaud account. 

The same functionality that’s offered by the Plaud mobile app is also available from a Plaud web-based application. This works from any computer’s web browser.

AI Is Used to Create Accurate Transcriptions, Summaries, and Mind Maps

The key to any AI-driven transcription and summarization tool is its accuracy. Whenever I’ve worked with these tools in the past, I often found the accuracy of the transcriptions to be marginal, at best. (Although I continue to be very happy with the results generated using the AI built into the latest Android phones.) That said, during my experience working with the Plaud Note, I discovered it’s able to generate extremely accurate transcriptions. No transcription tool offers 100 percent accuracy, but the Plaud Note is far more reliable than most other AI transcription tools I’ve used in the past.

While the device itself does not have a built-in display, while it’s recording, a small white light appears near the top of the device so you know it’s working. I found that operating the Plaud Note is very simple. There are just two buttons on the device. The record button and a toggle switch.

How to Use the Plaud Note

When the switch is in the down position, the device can record meetings, interviews, or in-person conversations, for example. To record a phone conversation, toggle the switch up, and attach the device to the back of a smartphone phone using the included MagSafe case. Remembering which position to toggle the switch to is perhaps the most complicated aspect of using the Plaud Note. Another impressive feature is that the Plaud Note offers integrations with dozens of popular applications, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Google Gmail, and Salesforce.

When you’re ready to start recording, simply press and hold down the round record button located on the front of the device for one second. Press the record button again to end the recording. During the recording process, the Plaud app does not have to be running on your phone. In fact, the device can be used without your phone being present.

Using the Plaud app, audio recordings get transferred from the Plaud Note to your phone or the web-based app. From here, you can play the recordings back, or use AI to automatically edit the audio and remove unwanted silent gaps in the recording. I was also impressed by the integrated audio playback tools that include a playback speed option and AI speech enhancement feature. You can also manually trim a recording. 

What sets the Plaud Note apart from other dedicated digital recorders and what can help you boost your productivity is that the mobile or web app can create a word-for-word transcription of an audio recording and export it as an editable text file that automatically identifies separate speaking voices.

To save time, the app can analyze a recording and, using AI, pick out key moments, so you can listen to a shortened version of a meeting or class, for example. But if you want to see a summary of the text-based transcription, the Plaud can provide that, too.

Yet another feature I found interesting is the mind mapping tool. Using it, you can take a recording and have the AI create a colorful mind map of a recording so you can view key points and important information at a glance.

Whether it’s an original recording, an edited version of a recording, a text-based transcription, a text-based summary, or a mind map, any content that the Plaud app creates or stores can be shared with others in a variety of popular file formats. After the mobile app prepares a file to share, you can select any of the options offered by the phone’s Share menu, such as email or text message. Or, you can export the content from the Plaud web app to the app of your choice for further editing and review. 

As any content is stored or created using the app, those files automatically sync with your cloud-based Plaud account (which offers unlimited storage for your files), so you always have access to a secure backup.

What’s a Summary Template?

For enhanced transcription accuracy, I discovered choosing an appropriate template helps a lot. Just after you request an audio file be transcribed, you can choose the Autopilot or Reasoning Autopilot option which allows the integrated AI to choose the best approach to take when creating a specific transcription. However, the app also offers more than 15 templates to choose from, including Meeting Note, Speech Note, Dictation Note, Call Note, and Interview Note, along with more specialized templates for discussions, class recordings, recordings of training sessions, recordings of lectures, and more. 

At any time, if you’re not pleased with the accuracy of a transcription, select the re-transcribe tool and select a different template. During my time using the Plaud Note, I rarely needed to use the re-transcribe, re-analyze, or re-summarize options.

Discover the Plaud Note Device

The housing of the Plaud Note is made from plastic. The design is simplistic, but highly functional. You can keep the device in a shirt or pants pocket, or attached to the back of your phone, so it’s readily available when and where it’s needed. The battery lasts for up to 30 hours of continuous recording or up to 60 days in standby mode. 

Recharging the device’s battery is done using the included cable. The proprietary end of the cable attaches to the Plaud Note, while the opposite end plugs into the USB Type-C port. A USB Type-C to USB Type-A adapter is also included, although a charge block is not.

The Plaud Note Subscription Options

The Plaud Note includes what is referred to as the Starter Plan. This provides up to 300 audio transcription minutes per month for the life of the device. However, if this isn’t enough to meet your needs, the following subscription plans are offered:

• Plaud AI 600 Minute Plan ($9.90) – Allows for 600 additional audio transcription minutes that can be used anytime during a 24 month period. When the minutes are used up, an additional plan can be purchased.
• Plaud AI 3,000 Minute Plan ($49.00) – Allows for 3,000 additional audio transcription minutes that can be used anytime during a 24 month period. When the minutes are used up, an additional plan can be purchased.
• Plaud AI 6,000 Minute Plan ($89.00) – Allows for 6,000 additional audio transcription minutes that can be used anytime during a 24 month period. When the minutes are used up, an additional plan can be purchased.
• Plaud AI Annual Pro Plan ($79.00) – Includes a total of 1,200 audio transaction minutes per month for a 12 month period. If you require additional minutes, beyond the 1,200 minutes allocated for a year, you can purchase the 600, 3,000, or 6,000 minute plan.
• Plaud AI Annual Unlimited Plan ($239.99) – With this plan, you can create unlimited audio transcriptions during a 12 month period. Plus, in addition to the included summary templates, you can create your own. 

Which plan you choose should be based exclusively on your personal or professional needs. I recommend starting off with the included audio transcription plan to see firsthand how well the Plaud Note works in your everyday life. Then, if needed, upgrade to an optional plan that best meets your anticipated needs.

What Makes Plaud Note’s Transcription So Accurate?

Unlike recording devices that offer local AI-driven audio transcription, Plaud Note connects to your phone or a web-based app and takes full advantage of three AI models — Chat-GPT 4.0, o3-mini, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet — to generate the most accurate transcriptions possible. 

During my experiments using the device, I found it’s able to create far more accurate and reliable transcriptions, summaries, and mind maps than many other devices on the market. And it makes the audio recordings, transcripts, summaries and mind maps more readily accessible compared to the iFlyTek Smart Recorder, for example, which I also recently reviewed.

Who Will the Plaud Note Appeal To?

Business professionals, interviewers, journalists, students, and anyone who could benefit from having a clear audio recording, text-based transcript, and summary of a recording can benefit from the Plaud Note. There are also special transcription templates for medical professionals. It’s affordable, easy to operate, and compact enough to be taken and used virtually anywhere, from an office or meeting room, to a classroom. The device’s ability to easily record and transcribe phone conversations is also a huge benefit to some people.

Artificial intelligence is being integrated into many of the computers, mobile devices, and other tech-oriented gear we use in our everyday lives. There are certainly some uses of AI that are more beneficial than others. Transcribing and summarizing audio is certainly among those otherwise tedious tasks that are made simple using the Plaud Note.

Final Thoughts: Is the Plaud Note Worth It?

Yes, based on the cost of the device itself and the various additional transcription minute plans, I believe Plaud Note is well worth the investment. It comes with all of the accessories needed for it to be used effectively right out of the box. The device does everything it’s supposed to do, and it does it well. Plus, regular updates to the Plaud app allow new features to be added and for the transcription accuracy to be improved even further, without having to buy a new device.

A Noteworthy Competitor: Mobvoi TicNote AI Voice Recorder

Priced at $120 and available from Amazon, the Mobvoi TicNote AI Voice Recorder is very similar to the Plaud Note. It includes 64GB of internal storage, and is able to transcribe audio in more than 100 languages. It can also be wirelessly connected to a smartphone to record calls.

This too is an AI-driven device that can transcribe audio word-for-word, plus create summaries and mind maps of recordings. One interesting feature integrated into this device is called Shadow. It’s TicNote’s built-in AI assistant that allows users to converse with the device to obtain answers to questions or gather real-time insights.

All recordings and transcriptions created by the TicNote are automatically encrypted locally for added security, before any content gets uploaded to the unlimited cloud storage that’s provided.

The rechargeable battery built into the device lasts for up to 25 hours of continuous recordings, while the internal storage can hold up to 434 hours of recordings.

I found this device is particularly useful for recording, transcribing, and summarizing phone calls, interviews, meetings, and classes/seminars. And like the Plaud Note, it comes with a case and charging cable.

Included in the price is a three month subscription to the Pro Plan transcription services that includes 1,500 credits per month. After that, you can keep the subscription active for $12.99 per month, or prepay for a 12-month plan for $79 (and also get 1,500 credits per month).

Additional credit bundles are priced at $2.99 (150 credits), $9.90 (750 credits), $49 (3,750 credits), and $89 (7,500 credits). To generate a transcription and summary of a recording, the charge is one credit per minute.

The three built in microphones within the TicNote do an excellent job picking up and clearly recording mono or stereo audio originating from up to 32 feet away.

One thing I like about this device is that it has a tiny OLED display that clearly shows when audio is being recorded. The Plaud Note, on the other hand, has just a tiny LED light that illuminates when the device is being used. Meanwhile, the Plaud Note has integrated transcription templates for specific tasks, while the TicNote does not offer this feature.

The TicNote measures 2.2 inches wide by 3.5 inches long by 0.12 inches thick. It weighs a mere 1.02 ounces, so it easily fits in a pocket.

I was just as impressed using the Mobvoi TicNote as I was using the Plaud Note, so for most people, either option is viable if you’re seeking an extremely portable digital recorder with transcription capabilities and more.
