reMarkable Paper Pro Move: There’s Finally a Handheld Digital Notepad That Really Works (and In Full Color, Too)

A few months ago, I tested and wrote a full-review of the reMarkable Paper Pro. I concluded it’s the best dedicated digital notepad on the market. To recap, for anyone who prefers to handwrite or draw directly on a digital device’s screen, and keep all notes, ideas, sketches, forms, and to-do lists well-organized and easily accessible, the reMarkable Paper Pro is a versatile digital notepad. It offers an 11.8-inch, full-color, e-ink display that can be viewed in any lighting situation. It’s a sleek and lightweight device. In fact, it’s about the size of a Letter (8.5 inch x 11 inch) paper notepad. And it comes with its own pen-shaped stylus.

Not only did the reMarkable Paper Pro perform well beyond my expectations back when I did the extensive hands-on testing and review, I have continued to use it. Since then, the company has released multiple firmware updates that have introduced new features to the device (like the ability to import, view, annotate, and share Microsoft Word, ePub, and PDF files).

In September 2025, reMarkable shrunk down the Paper Pro into a pocket-sized digital notepad with a 7.3-inch, Canvas Color touchscreen. The device features the same pen-like stylus as Paper Pro. It also offers the same functionality and user interface. Thus, it allows users to handwrite, draw, annotate, and share full-color documents. Unfortunately, the Paper Pro Move is not waterproof (or even water-resistant), but it’s easy to carry around. It also relies on a sharp e-ink display that can be clearly viewed in any lighting situation – from a dark room to direct sunlight.

I discovered that the pen-shaped stylus that comes with both the reMarkable Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move is the ideal size and weight to hold in your hand and comfortably write or draw with. Since I loved just about everything about the full-size reMarkable Paper Pro, I was more than thrilled to test out the review unit of the reMarkable Paper Pro Move that the company recently sent me. 

Since the two devices automatically sync with my reMarkable cloud account and between each other, I now keep the full-size Paper Pro on my desk, and carry around the Paper Pro Move just about everywhere I go. I use both devices for daily note taking, to read and annotate PDF and Word files, to create and manage to-do lists, and more. I have also created several of my own PDF templates that allow these devices to perfectly cater to my personal workflow.

Having tested many digital notepads from a handful of manufacturers, I believe reMarkable’s devices are the best dedicated digital notetaking tools on the market. Keep reading to learn why I think the Paper Pro Move is a truly excellent productivity and note taking gadget.

The reMarkable Paper Pro Is a Versatile Digital Notepad

Back in the 2nd century A.D., people wrote on parchment paper and stitched the pages together to create rudimentary notebooks. It wasn’t until the early 1900s when what we now refer to as a paper-based Legal pad came into existence. It then took over a century for the paper-based notebook to go digital. These days, there are multiple companies selling digital notepads with a pen-shaped stylus. These all allow users to handwrite or draw directly on a digital screen, organize their notes and lists into notebooks (or folders), and then organize and share those creations.

The reMarkable Paper Pro Move does all this and more. It’s a dedicated, handheld digital notepad with an included stylus. Users can write or draw on the screen in full color using their choice of virtual writing tools that can replicate a pencil, ballpoint pen, fountain pen, marker, highlighter, or another writing instrument.

It’s also possible to change ink color and ink thickness on the fly. Another awesome feature is that the reMarkable Paper Pro Move can transform handwriting into editable text. Or, you can make a virtual keyboard appear on the screen which allows users to type notes.

While using the reMarkable Paper Pro Move, individual note pages can be created, but it’s just as easy to create a custom-labeled digital notebook that contains as many pages as you need. Plus, there are dozens of pre-created page styles, such as blank paper, multiple lined paper formats, graph paper formats, checklists, and to-do list formats. There are also templates for meeting notes, brainstorming ideas, creating a digital daily planner/calendar, storyboarding, or composing music on staff paper.

The reMarkable Paper Pro Move offers a full-color e-ink display, so it’s easy on the eyes. Staring at the screen for extended periods does not cause eyestrain. The display can light up and easily be viewed in a dark room, or allow content to be displayed — glare free — outdoors in direct sunlight.

My favorite things about this device are that, like a pocket-size, paper-based notepad, it fits comfortably in one hand while you write on the screen (using the stylus) with the other hand. And when it’s not in use, the device fits in a pants or jacket pocket, briefcase, purse, or backpack. 

Unlike a traditional tablet, the rechargeable battery integrated into the reMarkable Paper Pro Move lasts up to two weeks (not mere hours). As for optional accessories, I highly recommend investing in one of reMarkable’s smart covers to protect the device and stylus during transport. These covers are thin and available in a variety of colors. You can also choose between a polymer weave fabric ($69), mosaic weave fabric ($99), or elegant premium leather ($139) cover.

Beyond just using the reMarkable Paper Pro Move as a digital notepad, it can serve as a customizable productivity tool for viewing, editing, annotating, signing, and sharing PDF files, ePub files, and Microsoft Word documents. Importing documents into the device is done wirelessly, thanks to the reMarkable cloud service, mobile app (for iOS and Android), or computer software (for Windows and Mac).

One thing I really love about the reMarkable Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move is that they’re dedicated digital notetaking tools. They provide a distraction-free handwriting experience. There are no optional apps, nor annoying alerts or notifications to deal with. It can’t be used as an audio player or web surfing tool, but does support the ePub file format for importing and reading ebooks.

Thus, while you’re reading or writing, you won’t be distracted by incoming emails or text messages. But, you can import documents you want to read and review into the device with ease, or create individual note pages or notebooks from scratch. 

Thanks to the portability of this device, you can keep it with you throughout the day, leave it on your nightstand at night, and be able to document and preserve ideas, to-do items, or inspirations whenever they come to you. The product designers have lived up to their company’s name and created a truly remarkable digital notetaking device that caters to a user’s writing, drawing, document viewing, and document annotating habits. 

I found that the proprietary writing surface on the Paper Pro Move’s display, when used with the included stylus, provides a truly authentic writing experience. It is very similar to writing on paper with a pen, pencil, fountain pen, marker, or highlighter. This experience is unlike writing on the ultra-smooth surface of a traditional tablet, where the tip of an optional stylus often slides around on the display making handwriting or sketches look like they were created by a kindergartener.

One set of features the reMarkable digital notebooks lacks (at least for now) relates to the use of artificial intelligence and having a digital assistant at your disposal. The Paper Pro Move will not create or compose notes or documents for you based on spoken or typed prompts, nor will it proofread or translate any documents you create. It also lacks the ability to transcribe audio into text-based content, or create AI generated summaries of documents. It’s designed to primarily be a tool for handwriting notes, lists, and other content, and serve as a digital sketchpad, too.

Who Will the reMarkable Paper Pro Move Appeal To?

Even for someone who is able to type very quickly on a virtual or traditional computer/mobile device keyboard, when it comes to note taking or journaling, many people prefer handwriting, or being able to draw/sketch freehand using a pen-shaped stylus. It’s these people that the reMarkable Paper Pro Move will appeal to the most. 

So, whether you’re a businessperson, entrepreneur, sketch artist, student, avid notetaker, someone who keeps a daily journal, or you like to stay organized using to-do lists or sticky notes, the Paper Pro Move can become an indispensable notetaking, content creation, productivity, and organizational tool. I found there are many ways to benefit from the device’s core functionality, especially when you’re out and about.

These capabilities are further enhanced by a user’s ability to switch between ink colors, virtual writing instruments, and virtual paper styles. This device is also useful for reviewing/proofreading, annotating, and signing Word, ePub, or PDF documents that have been wirelessly imported into the device. 

Eight Key Features of the reMarkable Paper Pro Move

I found the Paper Pro Move is extremely versatile and easy to interact with using the stylus. It combines old-school handwriting with technology-based content sharing and management. Here are eight of the digital notepad’s core functions.

Handwrite or Draw (In Color) Using the Pen-Shaped Stylus

As a dedicated digital notepad, all a user needs to do is power on the reMarkable Paper Pro Move, select a blank quicksheet, create a notebook, or open a notebook. Next, select a paper style, and then start writing or drawing on the virtual page using the stylus. Once a page is open, you can choose the virtual writing tool, ink color, and ink thickness of your choice.

As with all e-ink devices, many colors can be displayed, but they appear more muted, compared to what you’d see on a computer monitor or traditional mobile device’s screen. Also, e-ink displays are not the best at showcasing highly-detailed digital photos.

From the icon-based menu that appears on the display, your writing selections can be changed anytime. And by turning the stylus upside-down, you get access to a virtual eraser. Individual pages or notebooks containing your handwritten notes or sketches can then be shared with others via email, uploaded to your reMarkable cloud account, and synced with the reMarkable mobile app or computer app. This is the most basic functionality offered by the reMarkable Paper Pro Move. 

Convert Handwritten Notes Into Editable Text

While you can keep your handwritten notes and content as is, the reMarkable Paper Pro Move can transcribe your handwriting into editable and searchable typed text. The process of converting handwriting into editable text requires a few quick steps, but in general, I found the conversion is pretty accurate (but not perfect).

Use the Virtual Keyboard to Type Notes

Built into the reMarkable Paper Pro Move’s operating system is the ability to activate a virtual keyboard (just like on a smartphone or tablet). This means you can type notes, as opposed to handwriting them. I found this process also works well, but it defeats the purpose of having a digital notepad that’s designed primarily for handwriting notes and creating sketches.

Create Custom Named Notebooks (Folders) and Quicksheets

One of the convenient features integrated into the reMarkable Paper Pro Move’s operating system is the ability to choose a single Quicksheet option, or create individual and custom-named notebooks/folders. This makes organizing your content simple, since any number of notebooks/folders can be created. It’s then possible to share individual pages or entire notebooks with others, directly from the device when it’s connected to the internet via Wi-Fi.

Take Advantage of Templates for Specific Tasks

Beyond your choice of paper styles, reMarkable offers a library of downloadable templates. These allow users to create nicely formatted lists, calendars, daily planner pages, meeting notes, storyboards, and other stylized content.

Using a word processor or graphics design tool on a computer, anyone can create their own forms or templates in a PDF file format, and then transfer them to the handheld digital notebook. It’s this functionality that further expands the ways the Paper Pro Move can be customized to adhere more closely to a user’s writing habits or needs. 

Read, Annotate, Sign, and Share PDF or Word Files

For someone who regularly needs to review and annotate text-based documents, any Microsoft Word or PDF formatted files can be transferred to the reMarkable Paper Pro Move. It’s then possible to choose a red ballpoint pen virtual writing instrument, for example, to mark up a document, or highlight text using a virtual highlighter in the color of your choice. 

App Integrations Further Expand the Paper Pro Move’s Capabilities

reMarkable uses its own cloud-based service for storing and syncing content. For $2.99 per month (or $29 per year), a reMarkable Connect subscription provides unlimited cloud storage, unlocks the ability to search handwritten text, grants access to an ever growing library of templates, and allows content to be viewed and edited on a reMarkable device or using the reMarkable mobile or desktop app. If you plan to rely heavily on your digital notepad, the Connect service is a worthwhile investment.

However, thanks to app integrations, the reMarkable Paper Pro Move can access and sync files with a Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive account. Plus, the device works seamlessly with Slack. There’s even a screen share tool you can use during online meetings.

Use the Paper Pro Move As An eBook Reader

Since the Paper Pro Move supports both the industry-standard ePub eBook file format and can display PDF files, the digital notepad can be used as an eBook reader (but not as an audiobook or podcast player).

As you’re reading an eBook, you can annotate the text with your handwritten or typed notes, or use a virtual highlighter to make important text stand out visually. While you can also search these documents, the eBook reading experience is less robust than what you get using an Amazon Kindle, for example.

My Final Thoughts: Is the reMarkable Paper Pro Move Worth It?

The reMarkable Paper Pro Move is not cheap. However, it can be very useful in both your personal and professional life. The device’s user interface is intuitive. I like that the device can be held and used in portrait or landscape mode.

I also greatly appreciate that reMarkable is continuously allowing this device to evolve by adding few features and functions via free firmware updates. While the interface can utilize a virtual keyboard, this digital notepad will definitely appeal more to people who want to handwrite or sketch directly on the screen using the stylus.

If you’re an avid notetaker, or need a way to keep all of your notes and lists organized, while being able to automatically sync the content with your computers and mobile devices, the reMarkable Paper Pro Move offers a convenient and reliable way to do this. It takes the concept of a handheld, paper-based notepad into the 21st century. 

Out of all the dedicated digital notepads currently on the market, I’ve discovered the reMarkable Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move are among the only devices that can live up to an avid notetaker’s expectations, while providing enough value to justify the financial investment. I continue to be a huge fan of the reMarkable Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move digital notepads and the functionality these devices offer.

That said, there’s a new generation of digital notepads on the horizon from other companies that add more AI-driven functionality and audio recording/playback capabilities into these devices. Meanwhile, if you want to combine a robust eBook reading experience with a larger size digital notepad with an 11-inch display, I also recommend looking at the latest generation of the Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft ($680).
