The Asus ROG Strix G16 (2025) Laptop Is a Portable Powerhouse That’s Enhanced My PC Gaming Experience

If you’re shopping for a really good gaming laptop, I suggest choosing one from a reputable brand that’s known for its gaming gear. Republic of Gamers, a division of Asus, offers a vast product line consisting of laptops, desktops, mobile devices, accessories, and more, all designed specifically for gamers. And the good news is that while gaming laptops are becoming more powerful, their prices continue to drop, which should please anyone on a budget.

The 2025 edition of the Asus ROG Strix G16 is one of the company’s best-selling gaming laptops. With its starting price of $1,500, it’s nicely equipped to provide high-performance and responsive gaming in a form factor that’s easy to transport.

There are a few things to keep in mind about the Asus ROG Strix G16. First, the laptop is available with many different hardware configurations, so pricing varies a lot. Second, the laptop is a bit larger and heavier than a traditional laptop. That said, whichever configuration you choose, it’s ready to provide a top-notch gaming experience that can run any of the latest PC games that are locally installed or cloud-based.

Republic of Gamers recently sent me a review unit of the Strix G16 to test. The specifications for the model I received (powered using an Intel Core i7 14650HX 2.2 processor) are listed below. Other available configurations rely on one of the AMD Ryzen 9 processors, although you can also find this laptop configured with an Intel Core Ultra 7, Intel Core Ultra 9, Intel Core i9-14900HX, or a 13th Gen Intel Core i5 12450HX processor. So, before making a purchase, it’s important to know what you need out of the gaming hardware. 

As part of my testing, I played a handful of popular, graphic-intensive, action-oriented games. I also streamed TV shows and movies from Netflix, and ran a handful of everyday computing applications to see how well the laptop handled these tasks. This is not the most powerful gaming laptop out there, but the Asus ROG Strix G16 is a well priced and highly capable machine. Keep reading to learn more about this Windows-based gaming laptop.

Who is the Asus ROG Strix G16 Gaming Laptop Made for?

All of the Republic of Gamers (ROG) laptops are designed by and for gamers. The Asus ROG STrix G16 is more than adequate for casual gamers, but social, and even competitive gamers of all ages will appreciate what the Asus ROG Strix G16 has to offer. 

This is also an excellent option for content creators (including video editors) seeking a laptop with a powerful processor and high-end graphics card. The Asus ROG Strix G16 does a decent job balancing portability with performance, so it can easily handle the everyday computing needs of students and business professionals too. There are plenty of general purpose Windows laptops out there that are thinner and lighter, but similarly priced. These are not necessarily gaming laptops, however. 

I recommend this laptop to gamers who also want a computer capable of handling all sorts of other everyday tasks, and that has Microsoft Copilot+ PC AI technology and features baked into its operating system.

What Makes the Asus ROG Strix G16 An Awesome Gaming Laptop

Republic of Gamers has done a nice job bundling the computing hardware gamers need into a laptop that’s fairly priced. One of the key things I am most impressed with are the size, quality, resolution, refresh rate, and performance of the display. And since the laptop is for gamers, the RGB lighting that surrounds the bottom of the laptop and the backlit keyboard are a welcome addition.

I found the chiclet keyboard to be comfortable to type on and very responsive, and you get a large size touchpad, too. When you’re done gaming and need a general purpose computer at your disposal, the Asus ROG Strix G16’s keyboard has a Copilot key (to the right of the space bar), so Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC AI tools and features are readily accessible. Of course, the laptop can run virtually any Windows or cloud-based application, even if it’s not entertainment-oriented.

The laptop’s built-in stereo speakers are decent, but to experience more immersive audio, I suggest using a high-quality pair of Bluetooth earbuds or headphones, whether you’re gaming, streaming video or music, or using the laptop for other tasks that involve audio.

I was pleasantly surprised to find an impressive selection of ports on the right and left side of the laptop. They’re conveniently located, well labeled, and provide plenty of options for connecting other devices or accessories. A LAN port is built in, which is a plus for gamers. As for wireless connectivity, the Asus ROG Strix G16 supports the very latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 protocols.

There’s also an HDMI port and several USB Type-A and USB Type-C ports, in addition to the port for plugging in the laptop’s power adapter. Speaking of the power adapter that comes with the laptop, it’s a bit on the large side, but the length of the power cord is slightly over 10-feet when fully extended.

As I mentioned earlier, one of the more confusing aspects of buying the Asus ROG Strix G16 laptop is all of the available configurations. Based on your own preferences and budget, start by choosing a processor that offers the level of performance you desire. 

All available configurations offer a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060, RTX 5070 or RTX 5080 GPU, which are all good choices for gamers and content creators. There are also a few options when it comes to the display type, although all available options offer 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, a 3mn response time, and Dolby Vision HDR support.

Since gaming laptops require their CPU and GPU to run at peak efficiency, the Asus ROG Strix G16 uses a combination of intelligent cooling technologies that help it maintain a cool temperature and run quietly. The laptop is equipped with an end-to-end vapor chamber, tri-fan technology, and a sandwiched heatsink design that allow it to run the CPU cooler than many competing laptop models. This is yet another win for gamers. The laptop also offers tool-free access for upgrading the SSD and RAM in the future. 

Based on the games you want to experience or the applications you plan to use, you can choose between 8GB and 64GB of RAM. For most users, 16GB or 32GB of RAM should be adequate. I do, however, recommend opting for a 1TB SSD for internal storage, since many of the latest AAA games that get installed locally take up a lot of storage space. The version of the laptop provided to me for testing by Republic of Gamers is one of the most popular configurations, and it’s available from Amazon.

With the Asus ROG Strix G16 It’s All About the Games

When I first removed the laptop from its packaging and plugged it in, the startup and configuration process took a while. Firmware, Windows, and other updates needed to be downloaded and installed. Then, to download and install a handful of games took an additional several hours — so patience is an absolute must.

The configuration of the Asus ROG Strix G16 I was provided with had no issues running all of the games I downloaded and installed, including those that are part of the XBox Game Pass. In addition to using the keyboard and touchpad to control several games, I easily paired a wireless mouse with the laptop which provided greater accuracy and control. It was just as easy to wirelessly pair an Xbox controller to the laptop, which was beneficial when playing some arcade-style games. 

The combination of a fast CPU, higher-end GPU, fast DDR5 5600MHz memory, along with a fast SSD allow for quick load times and impressive overall performance. This technology works nicely with the laptop’s display (which provides high resolution, a high refresh rate, and a response time as low as 3ms. As a result, motion blur and screen tearing are virtually eliminated which allows the laptop to offer a smoother and more enjoyable gaming experience.

It’s not just the technology that makes the Asus RIG Strix G16 a good gaming machine. This laptop also looks the part thanks to its cyberpunk aesthetic and integrated RGB lighting. In my opinion, this laptop checks all the boxes in terms of what a gamer should look for.

The ASUS ROG Strix G16 Plays Games, But Does So Much More

Any laptop that’s designed for gaming by default also does an impressive job with streaming video and music. So, I wasn’t surprised by the superior viewing experience while watching TV shows and movies via Netflix, Paramount Plus, Hulu, and Disney+. The detailed picture presented on the laptop’s display is smooth and showcases accurate colors. All of the apps for the popular streaming services are readily available from the Microsoft Store and take just a few minutes to download and install.

Again, while the laptop’s built-in dual stereo speakers sound good, I found audio from games and while streaming content was much more immersive, especially when I used earbuds that support noise cancellation and spatial audio.

The Asus ROG Strix G16’s capabilities don’t end with gaming and streaming. This is a powerful, general purpose computer that can run all sorts of locally installed or cloud-based applications – such as Microsoft 365 apps, Google apps and services, any web browser, photo or video editing applications, and so much more. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a Windows or cloud-based application that doesn’t run efficiently on this laptop.

My Final Thoughts: Is the Asus ROG Strix G16 Gaming Laptop Worth It?

I wholeheartedly believe that the Asus ROG Strix G16 is well worth its $1,500 price tag, although based on the configuration you choose, the price could be higher. I’d describe the Asus ROG Strix G16 as a great gaming laptop that can do so much more than run games. The laptop can be a great gift for a high school or college student who studies hard but also enjoys gaming.

Understand that this laptop weighs 5.84 pounds and is almost an inch thick when shut. And with its 16-inch display, you need a larger-size and well-padded laptop bag to safely transport and store it.
