The folks at Ecovacs Robotics recently provided me with a review unit of its Deebot X12 OmniCyclone to test in my own home. While this company is not as well known as iRobot, Roborock, Eureka, or Shark in the robotic home cleaning tool category, I quickly discovered this robot nicely transitions between mopping hard floors and vacuuming carpets. It includes features that are equivalent (and in some cases better) compared to what’s offered by some of the company’s highest-end competitors.

So, if you have a large living space containing a combination of hardwood floors, tile, laminate and carpet, the Deebot X12 OmniCyclone is a worthwhile investment when it comes to maintaining a clean home. The Deepbot X12 OmniCycle is designed to identify dirt and stains. It then uses built in tools and two cleaning solutions to abolish messes. This means it’s able to tackle new stains and messes without accidentally spreading dirt from other areas of a home. Plus, with the help of a wide, 10.6-inch roller, it’s able to mop larger areas than many other robotic floor cleaning devices.

When the Deebot X12 transitions from mopping floors to vacuuming carpets, the mop roller raises up and gets covered automatically. This exclusive feature keeps the carpeting dry and protected from dirty water. 

As a vacuum, the Deebot X12 OmniCyclone utilizes 22,000 Pa suction, so it offers 35 percent more airflow than the previous Deebot X11 Pro model. The vacuum brush also prevents tangles from pet hair.

As the robot travels over carpet, it blasts air to loosen deep-down dirt. Combined with more suction, this makes it easier for the brush to grab and collect particulates. This unit also has more powerful batteries that recharge faster and keeps the robot going for up to 458 minutes (depending on the cleaning modes being used). 

The station’s bagless design allows dirt to be transferred between the robot and its station automatically. The user can then easily remove and empty the station’s dirt bin. No bags means fewer parts that need to be replaced. The station also does a good job cleaning and drying the mop brush and dirty water tank. Each of the station’s bins can easily be removed and emptied (or refilled) without the user getting their hands dirty.

During my testing, I also appreciated the robot’s TrueEdge 3.0 cleaning technologies, which allows tight edges between the floor and walls, and around most types of furniture to be cleaned with greater precision and coverage. Loose dirt gets sucked up into the robot, as opposed to being pushed further into the edges.

Thanks to the robot’s sensors, cameras, and AI, once a cleaning area is mapped out, the Deebot X12 can maneuver over the thresholds between flooring and carpet (or that divide rooms). At the same time, the robot easily avoids stairs and other obstacles.

It’s equipped with four-wheel drive and a strong motor to keep it moving around your home. There’s also no cross-contamination between different types of dirt captured by the robot as it vacuums and mops. For the user, this means less interaction with the robot while it’s mopping and vacuuming (and switching between these tasks).

In addition to the technology that’s built into the station and robot, the Ecovacs Home smartphone app with “Agent Yiko 2.0” AI (available for iOS and Android) makes it easy for users to initially set up the station and robot, map out the home (which takes about 20 minutes), and then set up the robot to mop and vacuum on a specific schedule.

It can also be called upon anytime using voice commands to clean everyday messes that happen randomly. The app’s artificial intelligence makes interacting with the robot and instructing it to do complex cleaning tasks a rather straightforward process.

Unlike less expensive robotic vacuum and mop combos, I found that the Deebot X12 OmniCyclone does a better job than most when it comes to not spreading dirt or smearing residue. Just about everything gets picked up by the robot.

While the Deebot X12 looks a lot like the previously released X11, this model includes some useful new tech and features. The Deebot X11 Pro (now priced at $799) is also considered a high-end robotic cleaning solution for homes, but it lacks features like AI powered stain detection and pre-treater, a longer (and denser) roller mop, and a mop roller cover that’s used while the robot is vacuuming.

Who Does the Ecovacs Robotics Deebot X12 OmniCyclone Vacuum/Mop Appeal To?

Out of all the robotic vacuum and mop combos suitable for homes, the Ecovacs Robotics Deebot X12 OmniCyclone is ideal for larger households with a lot of hard floors and carpets.

While the robot does not climb up or down stairs, it does seamlessly switch from vacuuming to mopping (and vice versa), while providing a longer battery life and faster recharging than most competitors. Thanks to the improved performance (compared to the X11), this model handles vacuuming and mopping with equal power and precision.

Like most robotic floor cleaning tools, the time it takes for the robot to get the assigned cleaning tasks done is typically longer than it would take a human. The benefit is that the robot does the vacuuming and mopping. This allows the user to focus on other tasks while the robot works unsupervised. If a problem arises, the robot sends a message to the user’s smartphone. 

The ability to pre-program a cleaning schedule or use voice commands to initiate the immediate cleanup of a mess are two features that make the Ecovacs Robotics Deebot X12 OmniCyclone a pleasure to use. So, if you’re looking for an automated vacuum and mop that offers unique and cutting-edge technologies, this is one of the most advanced robots currently available. However, you do wind up having to pay a premium for these high-end features.

Putting the Ecovacs Robotics Deebot X12 OmniCyclone Vacuum/Mop to the Home Cleaning Test

As you’d expect from an advanced home cleaning robot, virtually all the device’s cleaning tools and features are adjustable via the smartphone app. Users also have complete control over scheduling. I found that the fast-charging batteries and AI assistance offered by the app allow the device to work pretty autonomously and efficiently. 

After doing its vacuuming and mopping, the Deebot X12 returns to its base. An auto cleaning feature then activates which empties the robot’s bins and tanks, cleans and dries the mop roller, and recharges the robot’s batteries. As the user, it’s your responsibility to keep the station’s clean water and cleaning solution tanks filled, and to empty out the dirty water tank and dust bin as needed. The app notifies you when these tasks must be done. 

I love the well-thought-out design of the station’s tanks and bins. They have easy to grab and hold handles and are easy to empty with the touch of a button. Refilling the clean water and cleaning solution tanks is also a quick and simple task. Keep in mind, for everything to work properly, the station must remain plugged into a power outlet. It comes with a six foot power cord. The robot also needs to connect to a home’s Wi-Fi and be paired with the Ecovacs Home app. 

While the unboxing and initial set up might take up to 30 minutes, no tools are required and the smartphone app walks users through the entire process. While the Deebot X12 offers advanced functions, it’s one of the easiest robots to operate, even if you’re not too tech savvy.

My Final Thoughts: Is the Ecovacs Robotics Deebot X12 OmniCyclone Vacuum/Mop Worth It?

The folks at Ecovacs Robotics are creative when it comes to giving fancy names to the technologies built into the Deebot X12 OmniCyclone and its station. Unlike other companies that rely on fancy marketing terms to promote a product, in this case, the catchy names – like Ozmo Roller Mop 3.0, FocusJet, ZeroTangle 4.0, PowerBoost Charging Plus, Yiko 2.0, and TruEdge 3.0 – represent technologies and features that work well together to help keep a home’s floors spotless.

Based on my testing, the Ecovacs Robotics Deebot X12 OmniCyclone Vacuum/Mop operates at a decently quiet volume, does a better than expected job vacuuming and mopping, and relies on AI to make important cleaning and self-operation decisions. I was particularly impressed with its ability to identify and put extra focus on pre-treating and then cleaning stains, as needed. Compared to other home cleaning robots, this one utilizes more tanks and bins that a user needs to deal with. However, most of the actual floor cleaning is handled by the robot. And the larger capacities of the station’s tanks and bins keep the robot operating autonomously for longer periods.

Home cleaning robots vary widely in what they can do and how well they perform the tasks they’re designed to perform. The Ecovacs Robotics Deebot X12 OmniCyclone is one of the few that does a lot more than average and excels at its overall cleaning performance. This makes it worth the financial investment, especially if you live with people and pets who are prone to mess making, spills, and dragging in dirt from outside. 

Compared to the previous Deebot X11, the X12 offers features like stronger suction, a wider mop roller, enhanced carpet protection, faster charging, better edge cleaning, and longer battery life. If you don’t need all of this robot’s latest bells and whistles, you can save some cash choosing the Deebot X11 Pro instead.
