The GoPro Hero 13 Is So Much More Than a Generic Action Camera

Everything the vast GoPro user community loves about the popular action cameras has gotten better with the release of the GoPro Hero 13 Black and GoPro Hero 13 Polar White. Both represent the company’s flagship camera, which is able to shoot video at up to 5.3K (30fps) or capture still photos at 27.13MP. Users can take advantage of multiple videography and photography modes (many not offered by other action cameras) to create pro-level content on land, in the water, or just about anywhere else.

What many people don’t realize is that the GoPro Hero 13 cameras are much more than durable action cameras. Thanks to their size and capabilities, they also represent a perfect camera to take on vacation or for capturing everyday life. Based on how the camera is configured, it can also be used for vlogging and content creation. This GoPro camera can be summed up in a single word: Versatile.

Back in September 2024, just before the GoPro Hero 13 was released, the folks at GoPro provided me with a camera, along with a handful of lenses and accessories. The company also invited me on a jet skiing adventure around New York City, where I got to test out the camera traveling at high speed in the Hudson River. This experience provided breathtaking views of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and more, which I was able to capture using the camera. Since then, I’ve used the GoPro Hero 13 Black as a still image and video camera in places where I wouldn’t want to risk damaging my smartphone.

The GoPro Hero 13 Is an Action Camera and So Much More

The base price of the GoPro Hero 13 Black camera is $399.99. However, you’ll also want to subscribe to the GoPro service for $24.99 per year, plus invest in a handful of mounts, mods, and accessories that allow the camera to perform well in various shooting situations.

With the right mount, you can attach the camera to your chest or head. The camera can also be securely mounted on the equipment you’re using, whether it’s a bike, car, skis, surfboard, or snorkeling gear. Or, if you want to hold the camera to capture photos or videos from a first- or third-person perspective, there are a handful of handles, portable tripods, selfie sticks, and other options designed specifically for the GoPro cameras.

The GoPro Hero 13 includes the camera itself (with one lens), one genuine GoPro Enduro battery, a curved adhesive mount, a mounting buckle, a thumbscrew, and a USB Type-C cable. A required microSD memory card is sold separately. Based on how and where you plan to use the camera, you can now purchase a collection of interchangeable lenses and lens filters for the camera, including the Ultra Wide Lens Mod, Macro Len Mod, Max Lens 2.0 Mod, and Anamorphic Lens Mod (each sold separately).

There are dozens of specialized camera mounts and mods (also each sold separately). The GoPro is designed to work seamlessly and be controlled remotely via the free GoPro Quik mobile app. This app makes wirelessly transferring content to your mobile device to be viewed, edited, and shared extremely simple. If you subscribe to the GoPro service, the camera can automatically sync your content in a private and secure cloud-based account. In fact, between the GoPro online service and vast selection of lenses and accessories, GoPro offers a complete and unrivaled ecosystem of dedicated products, apps, and services.

What I love most about the GoPro Hero 13 is the creative control it offers. In Easy mode, the camera pretty much sets itself up and automatically adjusts to your shooting location. But, if you want full control, you can switch to Pro mode and make manual adjustments to every available camera setting. You also get access to a handful of specialized video and photo shooting modes that make it almost foolproof when it comes to capturing smooth, well-lit, and professional-looking content.

Many people tap the power of the GoPro to capture amazingly vivid and smooth video from a first- or third-person perspective. But with a few on-screen taps, it takes just moments to change the field of view (between Linear, Wide, SuperView, or HyperView). These and other settings can be adjusted using the intuitive menu options displayed on the camera’s rear touchscreen, from the GoPro Quik smartphone app, using voice commands, or even from some popular smartwatches.

As a result, you can use the camera to take photos or shoot video that can be edited and shared directly from your mobile device or computer. To get the most out of the camera, invest the time acquainting yourself with each of its features and settings so you know when to use each of them and how to make the necessary adjustments. I found that the trick to capturing the best possible content is to choose the best features based on each unique shooting situation. Make sure you adjust the various settings appropriately, and then use the best mod(s) or accessories to achieve the desired result.

Who Will the GoPro Hero 13 Camera Appeal To?

First and foremost, if you’re an adventurer, this is the camera you want with you. With the proper mount, you can securely strap it to your head, helmet, chest, or the equipment you’re using. I also recommend this camera to ordinary folks who want to capture vacation memories or home videos with a camera that can be taken in the water or used in harsh weather conditions. What’s possible using the GoPro Hero 13 is limited only by your imagination and creativity when it comes to mixing and matching the camera’s features and functions with the optional mods, mounts, and accessories to capture the content you desire.

Thanks to built in features like image stabilization, HDR, the ability to switch lenses on the go, the camera’s longer battery life, and the way the camera’s built-in microphones capture clear stereo audio when you’re shooting video, just about anyone can create high resolution content with vivid colors, sharp visuals, ultra smooth action, and authentic sound.

Take Advantage of the GoPro Hero 13’s Two Screens

For added convenience, the GoPro Hero 13 has a front and rear-facing screen. This means you can see the camera’s settings and take advantage of a viewfinder, regardless of which direction the camera is facing. Since many people enjoy shooting with the camera facing themselves, the front-facing screen allows you to see what’s happening at all times. Useful information, like the battery life and available microSD card storage space, is also displayed.

The camera’s rear display is a 2.27-inch, full-color touchscreen. It’s used to adjust the GoPro Hero 13’s settings, as a viewfinder when shooting photos or video, and for previewing content after it’s been shot.

While not a touchscreen, the 1.4-inch, full-color screen on the front displays current camera settings. It, too, can also serve as a viewfinder while shooting.

Shooting Video Using the GoPro Hero 13

The GoPro Hero 13 offers more video shooting modes and options than ever before. This allows the camera to perform well in a wider range of shooting situations (compared to older versions of the GoPro Hero), whether you’re shooting in a first- or third-person perspective.

First, you can choose between Standard or HDR mode, depending on how vibrant you want the colors and how much intricate detail you want to see in your footage. Next, select the shooting Quality. Your options include Basic, Standard, or Highest. This determines the resolution and frames per second (fps) when the camera is in Easy mode.

You also have the option to choose one of these Framing options: Widescreen, Vertical, or Full Frame. Once this is selected, select between the Linear, Wide, SuperView, or HyperView field of view. You also get access to several Time Lapse modes, including Time Warp, Star Trails, Light Painting, and Vehicle Lights. More options are available when you set the camera to Pro mode or attach an optional lens to the camera. I found that adjusting the various camera settings remotely using the Quik app on a smartphone is a bit easier than using the camera’s rear touchscreen, but either option works well.

Taking Photos Using the GoPro Hero 13

Since the GoPro Hero 13 is often referred to as an ‘action camera’ for capturing high-action video content from a unique point of view and wide field, many people don’t realize it’s also possible to shoot 27.3MP resolution still images. When you select the Photo shooting mode, you also get easy access to the Photo Mode option, Field of View options (Linear or Wide), a timer, burst shooting mode, a night shooting mode, and other settings designed to ensure you’re able to capture clear, vibrant, and highly-detailed images.

There’s only a 2x zoom feature built into the camera when you’re shooting still images, but during the editing process, you can use the Crop and Repositioning tools to simulate a stronger zoom and focus in on your intended subject. Just like when using any point-and-shoot camera, snapping a photo once you adjust the camera’s settings is as simple as framing your shot and pressing the camera’s shutter button.

GoPro Mounts, Mods, and Accessories for Every Shooting Situation

GoPro offers a large selection of genuine mods, mounts, and accessories for the GoPro Hero 13 that allow users to customize the camera to meet specific needs. There are optional interchangeable lenses and filters that expand the field of view and other capabilities of the camera. There are also optional protective housings suitable for deep underwater use, or to make the camera itself even more durable.

The neutral density (ND) lens filter pack ($69.99) includes an ND4, ND8, ND16 and ND32 filter. These are used to create a motion blur effect when shooting action video.

Based on how and where you plan to mount the camera, you have literally dozens of optional mount options, including accessories for attaching the camera to specific equipment — from your surfboard or bicycle, to your vehicle’s dashboard, fishing pole, or even your dog. When it comes to optional tripods, handles, and other ways to hold the GoPro Hero 13 in your hands while shooting, there is no shortage of options.

Used together, the GoPro Media Mod ($79.99) and Light Mod ($49.99) allow the camera to be used for vlogging and content creation.

For shooting traditional home videos, or for creating compelling vlog content, there’s the Media Mod and Light Mod that can be used together to add more light to a shooting location, while improving the sound quality being recorded. You can also find third-party wireless and portable microphones (from companies like Shure and DJI) that work nicely with the GoPro camera for clearly capturing specific types of audio, such as voices, music, or ambient sounds.

It’s All About the GoPro Ecosystem

In addition to offering the largest selection of optional mods, mounts, and accessories that come directly from GoPro, many third-party companies offer equipment that can be used with the camera. When you use the camera in conjunction with the subscription-based GoPro service, you get unlimited cloud storage, more robust video editing tools, access to a vast GoPro user community, generous discounts on popular GoPro accessories purchased from the GoPro website, and the ability to use AI to automatically create highlight videos from your raw footage. This feature works extremely well — and with zero effort — when it comes to creating short social media posts from a large amount of raw video footage and still images.

Another perk is that you automatically get guaranteed camera replacement from GoPro while your subscription is active. This means that if your camera gets damaged for whatever reason, GoPro will fix it or replace it up to twice per year (a deductible applies). I recommend subscribing to this service on an annual basis for just $24.99, although for more advanced users, there’s also a Premium+ subscription option for $99.99 per year. It includes additional content editing and image stabilization features.

My Top 5 Favorite GoPro Hero 13 Features and Functions

Compared to almost all of the other action cameras offered by other brands, not to mention previous generations of the GoPro Hero cameras, this latest model offers a wide range of new and innovative features and functions that greatly enhance what’s possible using this camera. Here are some of my favorite features that I found make it easy to consistently capture pro-quality photos and videos:

1. Interchangeable Lenses

For the first time, you can purchase optional lenses for the GoPro Hero 13 that expand the versatility of the camera by adding an ultra-wide lens to capture a 177-degree field of view, or a macro lens for extreme close-up videography or photography. With the Anamorphic lens, your videos can take on a more professional looking cinematic appearance.

2. Control the Camera Using Voice Commands

Since many of the optional camera mounts allow for hands-free camera operation, it makes sense that the GoPro Hero 13 can be remotely controlled using voice commands. Use commands like “GoPro start recording,” “GoPro stop recording,” “GoPro Photo mode,” or “GoPro Time Lapse mode” to remotely control your camera.

3. Impressive Image Stabilization

Since the GoPro Hero 13 is designed to be used while you’re participating in action, which means excessive camera movement, the built in image stabilization allows you to capture ultra-smooth video.

4. Support for HLG HDR Hybrid Log Gamma High Dynamic Range Video
