As someone who spends a lot of time doom scrolling on social media, I recently started to see ads for a small US-based company, called Lost Dutchman Leather, that handcrafts and sells a selection of premium leather wallets exclusively from its own website. (They’re not available from Amazon or through a retail store at your local mall.) The company is based in Apache Junction, Arizona, where all of the products are handcrafted using premium-quality leather that’s guaranteed for a lifetime. When I first saw photos of the wallets online, I was immediately intrigued, so I decided to purchase one for myself.
Lost Dutchman Leather's The Original Finnigan Wallet
Upon visiting Lost Dutchman Leather’s website and clicking on the Wallets menu option, I discovered the company offers a handful of original wallet designs (including several specifically for left-handed people). While each wallet design comes in a few stock colors, using the website’s Create Your Own feature, a customer can select their own leather and thread color combination and then have a one-of-a-kind wallet made to order. Plus, because each wallet is made from full-grain cowhide leather, it will develop a unique patina over time.
After browsing the company’s website, I selected The Original Finnigan wallet design in a color called Russet. One reason why I chose this color leather was how the patina will look over time. Since this is one of the company’s stock designs and colors, it was shipped out within a few days and arrived in just over one week.
What I discovered is that if you’re looking for a premium quality and unique wallet for yourself, or to give someone special as a gift, the products from Lost Dutchman Leather offer a really great option, especially if you choose to fully customize your order and select the leather and thread color combination for the wallet design you ultimately choose.

Lost Dutchman Leather Wallets Offer Something Unique
There are countless companies that make premium leather wallets, but most are mass-produced overseas and offer little or nothing special. Few come with a lifetime guarantee, or are handcrafted with a lot of passion and effort behind them. While I ordered The Original Finnigan wallet in a solid Russet leather color (which is an item the company keeps in stock), now that I’ve seen the product firsthand, I’m inclined to spend a bit more and have a second wallet created for myself using a more unique color combination.

Using the website’s Create Your Own feature, first choose the wallet design that appeals to you. You then have four choices to make. First, select the wallet’s primary leather color. There are 16 options to choose from, although 10 of the options come with an added fee of between $10 and $15. Next, choose the secondary leather color, which for The Original Finnigan is used for the wallet’s strap. Again, there are 16 colors to choose from, but this time, any of them are included in the wallet’s price.

The third option is the thread color used to bind the leather together. This thread is called Ritza 25. It’s a waxed, braided polyester thread designed to provide extra strength and durability. There are nine thread color options to choose from. Finally, for an extra $15, personalization can be added to the wallet. This can include up to five characters. For an extra $25, gold foiling can be added to that monogram. The Create Your Own section of the website is shown below.

So, if you select all of the add-ons, the wallet’s price jumps to $145, compared to the $75 price for the standard version of this wallet design, which is what I ordered. Keep in mind, Lost Dutchman Leather publishes promo codes to save customers money. For example, code DUTCHMAN20 gets you 20% off your purchase at checkout.
One extra thing to be on the lookout for when visiting Lost Dutchman Leather’s website is The Drop Zone section. On a regular basis, the company offers unique wallet designs or specialized leathers that are only available for a limited time, which makes those designs extra unique. Most products listed within this section sell out within a few days.
Another thing that caught my attention when I first started learning about this company was the selection of other handcrafted leather products available, including custom watch straps, Field Notes notebook covers, passport covers, belts, and other accessories (including key rings) that can nicely match any of the company’s wallets.
In addition to The Original Finnigan, you’ll discover the Big Finn 2, the Snap Finn, the Cash Finn, the Thin Finn, the Franklin, the Franklin 2, the Mini Franklin, the Dad Wallet, and the Dutchman wallet design. All offer the same leather options and premium quality, but each has a different style and capacity.
Who Should Use a Lost Dutchman Leather Wallet?
Many of the wallet designs created by Lost Dutchman Leather will appeal mainly to men. Since these are premium quality products that can be custom designed and then personalized, any of the company’s wallets will appeal to anyone who appreciates something that’s well-made, stylish, and durable when it comes to carrying their cards and cash.

People who want to support a small company that sells products designed and handcrafted in the United States will also appreciate the product selection Lost Dutchman Leather has to offer. Again, these wallets can make a great gift for someone else, or serve as a trusty wallet for yourself that’s comfortable to carry and extremely durable. For me, what stands out the most is the quality of craftsmanship and materials used to create each wallet.
My Final Thoughts: Is Lost Dutchman Leather’s The Original Finnigan Wallet Worth It?
For at least a decade, I have been using the same mass-produced leather wallet from a well-known brand, and it’s served me rather well. It was, however, starting to show serious signs of wear and tear (not elegant aging). That said, there was absolutely nothing special about it aside from its functionality. My former wallet was well-made, had several compartments for cash and cards, and fit comfortably in my pants pocket. Before discovering Lost Dutchman Leather, I had been looking for a replacement wallet for a while, but never found anything that I considered to be something special.

As soon as I unboxed The Original Finnigan wallet when it arrived, I knew I had found the perfect new wallet for myself. From an appearance, design, and quality standpoint, it checks all of the boxes. Plus, it’s clear that a lot of care and thought went into the wallet’s design and creation. The company also boasts more than 100,000 sales since 2020. I’d recommend this wallet to anyone who wants to upgrade their carry with a wallet that has an interesting story behind it, and that can be custom-designed based on a customer’s preferences.
