Souper Cubes Silicone Freezer Trays Are a Staple in My Kitchen

Freezer trays are a handy kitchen tool for meal prepping and saving freezable leftovers. If you haven’t seen them before, picture an ice-cube tray with larger compartments. They’re great for freezing food in specific portion sizes, and they make freezing liquids (like soup) manageable.

I’ve bought a handful of brands over the years, and hands down, my favorite are the Souper Cubes Silicone Freezer Trays.

Adding Souper Cubes to My Kitchen

I purchased my first set of two Souper Cubes freezer trays a little over a year ago. I ordered the aqua (bright teal) half-cup trays through Amazon. The half-cup tray features six compartments per tray, and I used them so much I ordered the 1-cup trays a few months later.

The 1-cup trays are the same overall length and width as the half-cup trays, but they have four compartments per tray. The trays come with a clear lid that snaps on securely.

Filling the Trays

Souper Cubes trays are remarkably sturdy, especially compared to other silicone and plastic freezer trays I’ve tried. According to Souper Cubes’ website, the trays have a steel frame embedded in the silicone. They stack well, and they don’t twist and dump out my soup on the way to the freezer.

I like that it’s safe to put hot food directly into these freezer trays. One of my go-to “convenience foods” is homemade soup. After I’ve made a large batch of soup, I can immediately fill a Souper Cubes tray. I typically ladle the hot soup right into a tray, let it cool on the counter or in the fridge, and then move it to the freezer.

Another great feature is that the Souper Cubes have volume markers in each of the tray’s compartments. The half-cup trays have markers for quarter-cup and half-cup, as well as 50 ml and 125 ml. The 1-cup trays have markers for half-cup and 1-cup, as well as 125 ml and 250 ml. I like that I can measure ingredients, such as chicken broth and marinara sauce, before I freeze them, making it easy later to thaw just the amount I need.

Emptying the Trays

Once frozen, I pop the food chunks out and into a freezer bag. I like that the trays hold their shape well, and my frozen soups, sauces, and juices come out smoothly. I’ve even been able to get frozen soup out of a Souper Cubes one-handed while juggling my fussy baby.

The only times I’ve struggled to remove food are when I over-stuffed the tray compartments before freezing casserole leftovers, making them bulge out to be slightly larger than the opening.

Solving the Labeling Issue

My only complaint about Souper Cubes is that the trays don’t come with a ready-made way to label the date and contents. I’ve seen this feature on similar products, and I think it would be a nice upgrade.

However, it’s easy to use masking tape and a marker, and I eventually bought dry-erase sticker labels for the lids. I label the food item and date on the lid, and then when I move the frozen food into a storage bag, I label the bag with the food, date, and portion size it was frozen in.

While writing this review, I noticed that the Souper Cubes website now sells kitchen tape and markers. I likely won’t try them, though, because I’m happy with my solution.

Washing My Souper Cubes Trays

The freezer trays wash well. I’ve both hand-washed them and run the trays through my dishwasher (on the top rack). In my experience, they don’t stain — even after I used my Souper Cubes to freeze spaghetti bake casserole.

The silicone freezer trays don’t typically hold odors after washing, although one of the trays once held onto what I thought of as a “stale freezer smell” until I’d run it through the dishwasher twice. I haven’t had issues other than that one time, and thankfully the second time through the dishwasher took care of the odor. (Note: While writing this review, I found instructions on the Souper Cubes’ website to help with removing odors if needed.)

Trying Souper Cubes’ Recipes

The Souper Cubes website features recipes that are tailored for food prep using its freezer trays. I’ve made a few of their recipes, and my sweet mother-in-law also tried a few for me when I was pregnant and newly postpartum.

Aside from being tasty (at least the ones I’ve tried!), the recipes that Souper Cubes posts are crafted specifically for freezer prep. For example, its Freezer-Friendly Chicken Pot Pie Recipe skips the traditional potatoes, explaining that “Potatoes absorb liquid when frozen and can be mealy when reheated. Instead of potatoes, we loaded up our version with vegetables.”

Some of its recipes, such as the Blueberry Banana Bread, include using the trays in the oven. I haven’t tried this yet, but I love the versatility and convenience. According to Souper Cubes’ website, the trays are oven-safe up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cooking On

I love having Souper Cubes trays in my kitchen. Unlike other freezer trays I’ve used, the firm frame and flexible silicone compartments make it easy to remove food once frozen. As a bonus, they haven’t stained — even with marinara sauce.

My Souper Cubes are almost always in use (or the dishwasher), and I’m eyeing up the 2-tablespoon trays next to make freezing leftover liquids like tomato sauce and pineapple juice even easier.
