The Honest Kitchen Wholemade dehydrated dog food line is a winner for other dogs, just not for my mini schnauzer Woof Woof.
I’m always debating whether Woof Woof should go on fresh, pre-made dog food. Currently, he does dry dog food plus human food, such as chicken and vegetables that I cook for him myself. I also incorporate whole grains such as oatmeal and brown rice into his bowl. Today, he had quinoa and tuna fish with a teaspoon of olive oil.
The Honest Kitchen Wholemade dehydrated dog food line seemed like a good alternative for when I don’t feel like cooking because the dehydrated option makes it easy for traveling and economical. It also makes it easier to alternate between me cooking and premade than refrigerated options that could expire if not used within a few days. There is just one problem: He just wasn’t a fan of the close-to-smooth texture. He needs a bit of crunch and maybe visible food in chunks to feel satisfied.

What is The Honest Kitchen Wholemade Dog Food Line?
Honest Kitchen is a fresh food option of dehydrated fruit, vegetables, and meat for canines. It comes in senior, puppy, and adult formulas with flavor combinations such as wholegrain chicken; wholegrain chicken, salmon and oats; and wholegrain beef and white fish. The brand loves giving dogs surf and turf options with whole grains. It comes in boxes ranging from 2 pounds to 10 pounds. Every ¼ cup makes a 1 full cup when water is added. Thus, 2 pounds of dry, dehydrated dog food makes 8 cups of dog food.
What was Woof Woof’s review experience like?
Woof Woof doesn’t eat wet dog food, so I firmly believe that’s why he wasn’t more excited about dehydrated fresh food. He has had all real food ingredients listed in whole food format in his life. I added warm water to the food twice a day when feeding him. Some days he would eat it after a while. Other days, he would eat it if I spoon fed him. I started by giving him ¼ cups to slow transition from his regular dog food. After a few weeks, I gave him his dry food back. However, he loves Honest Kitchen treats.

- The size: You get four times the fresh food out of a single box.
- Flavor and whole grain variety: The product line offers grain free, veggie bases, and limited ingredients products in addition to life stage options.
- The price: It’s much cheaper than fresh food from other dog food brands.
- Great transition food for dogs that currently eat wet food from cans: Dogs used to canned cuisine can enjoy the texture.
- Easy to carry on trips: The dehydrated format is helpful for carrying smaller amounts and doggie dinner can be made in an airport. He has foldable dog food bowls.
- Great for senior or other dogs who have lost teeth: The softer option is easier to chew for canines needing soft food.
Cons
- The texture: While it’s mostly made of whole foods, it doesn’t look like human food. Woof Woof likes crunchy textures or whole foods, such as chicken or broccoli.
- Teeth brushing is a must: If transitioning from a dry dog food, you will need to brush teeth more as the food could stick to teeth. Wet dog food or other fresh foods can have the same experience.
- Food combinations increase the likelihood of protein allergies: Dogs may have allergies to a range of proteins. Make sure your dog doesn’t have sn allergy to any of the ingredients listed.

Daily Life with Honest Kitchest Wholemade Products
Overall, it’s easy to make by just adding water. I wouldn’t buy this item for Woof Woof because it’s not a texture he enjoys. I would recommend it to other dogs where texture isn’t as important, such as ones who were raised on wet dog food or need a softer food for their teeth. It’s also a great travel dog food, if your dog likes it.

In My Expert Opinion
Woof Woof won the food at a The Honest Kitchen event. He managed a 3-minute stay on a dog bed. It’s one of several brands I’m reviewing. I’ve written about pets for nine years, since my mini schnauzer Woof Woof was born.
The biggest problem with the product is texture. He just isn’t used to seeing food that isn’t in some form of chunk, and he’s a very visual dog. He does love other The Honest Kitchen Treats, though, such as the Goat’s Milk N’ Cookies crunchy treats.
A potential issue is protein allergies. The canine set is known to have allergies to different proteins. The easy fix is to pick flavors you already know your dog doesn’t have a reaction to. For instance, if your dog gets sick after eating salmon in real life or salmon dog food, skip flavors containing salmon.
