Should You Upgrade to the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max? I’ve Had a Mixed Reaction to Apple’s Latest Smartphone

With October 2025 well underway, so is the annual Apple iPhone upgrade season. Last month, Apple announced (and shortly thereafter released) its upgraded lineup of iPhones, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max being the most powerful, fastest, and most expensive option. Yes, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has a slightly different design (especially on the back). It also now has a housing made from an aluminum alloy instead of titanium. The integrated cameras have been improved a bit, and the A19 Pro processor gives the phone a boost in speed and performance (compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max). The question is, should you upgrade to this new smartphone?

I’d love to say you should definitely upgrade, but alas, I cannot. What I can say is that if you’re currently using an iPhone 15 or earlier, upgrading to the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max is worthwhile, since the phone’s technology has certainly improved. However, if you’re thinking about upgrading from the iPhone 16 Pro Max to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, I’ve discovered that what you get is just an incremental upgrade that, for most users, is probably not worth the investment.

As I do every year just after Apple announces a new iPhone, I pre-ordered the device so I was among the first to receive it. Now that I’ve been using it for several weeks, I’ve come to a few somewhat surprising conclusions. So, if you want to learn more about whether the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max is a worthwhile investment, keep reading.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Overview: What’s New and What’s Been Rehashed Yet Again

I have owned and used every iPhone model from the very beginning – since June 2007 – and have seen some incredible technological advancements over the years. Every year, Apple boasts that its latest smartphone is faster and more powerful than the previous model, and that it includes a sharper and brighter display, longer battery life, a more durable design, and runs a more robust version of the iOS operating system. All this is true, but in reality, the enhancements and improvements have become more incremental, with much less of a “wow factor” over the past few years.

The Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max is certainly a robust and versatile smartphone with some impressive technology integrated into it. The phone smoothly runs iOS 26, as do many of the older model iPhones. As a result, any of the operating system or software driven features that have been improved with iOS 26 are also available in all iPhone models going back as far back as the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. That said, the iPhone 17 Pro Max can run the operating system and all of the apps you’d typically use more efficiently and with enhanced performance.

If you look on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the camera plateau has been expanded to take up the entire top portion of the phone, with the three rear-facing cameras now each offering 48MP resolution. There’s also the LiDAR and adaptive True Tone flash. Thus, you get an improved rear camera setup, and as promised, the upgraded processor and battery offer some performance improvement, too. 

However, the core design of the iPhone 17 Pro Max and its functionality is very similar to the iPhone 16 Pro Max. In fact, most users will not notice a huge improvement using this new smartphone in their everyday lives (if upgrading from last year’s model). It’s the power users who require that extra boost of processing power – including gamers and those who enjoy taking pictures, shooting video, and creating content using their iPhone – who will appreciate what this latest smartphone offers. Meanwhile, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max is Apple’s flagship smartphone, some features, including the device’s use of AI, pale in comparison to what the higher-end and most powerful Android smartphones (like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL) are capable of. 

The Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Runs iOS 26

Many of the newest and best features offered by the iPhone 17 Pro Max are a result of upgrades made to the iOS 26 operating system. Apple is making a big deal out of the “liquid glass” implementation, which alters the appearance of app icons and the Home screen, for example. But, this new feature has little to no impact on how the iPhone can be used, or on how it performs. It’s simply a cosmetic change that not everyone loves. 

The improvements made to many of the core apps that come preinstalled on the iPhone – such as Phone, Messages, Mail, Notes, Safari, Camera, Photos, and Maps – are noticeable and can make a positive difference in someone’s everyday experience using their smartphone. iOS 26 focuses a lot on enhanced efficiency, productivity, speed, privacy, and security. While all of the new features and app redesigns make for a more powerful smartphone, though, in many instances these changes make the phone less intuitive to operate. For example, if you browse through all of the additional options offered by Settings, it could take someone an hour or more to thoroughly go through each of them to fine tune and personalize how their smartphone performs.

Among other things, I am extremely impressed by the enhancements made to the Phone app. The iPhone now does a much better job filtering spam calls and telemarketers, thanks to integrated Call Screening. The Hold Assist feature makes it more convenient to make outgoing calls to companies that tend to leave customers on hold for extended periods. Now, when a live agent finally answers, your iPhone notifies you, so you don’t have to sit around listening to boring hold music.

The Mail app now makes it easier to manage multiple email addresses and keep everything organized, while the Camera and Photos apps offer more control than ever over the picture-taking and videography tools offered.

I’ve also become a fan of Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature, which uses the iPhone’s cameras in conjunction with AI to help users learn about virtually anything in the world around them. This feature is similar to Google Lens, which has long been available to iPhone users via the optional (and free) Google app. I discovered the live language translation feature is rather impressive, too. 

That said, Apple Intelligence and many of the AI tools integrated into iOS 26, Siri, and the preinstalled apps are all still a work in progress. It’s obvious, however, that the upgrades made to Notifications, for example, allow users to better manage information and determine what’s important when it comes to incoming calls, messages, emails, alerts, and alarms. Many of the AI-driven writing and proofreading tools integrated into iOS 26 can also be a huge time saver, since they can streamline someone’s written communications workflow, while incoming content (emails, voice messages, etc.) can be accurately summarized.

After several weeks using iOS 26, I’ve noticed many subtle improvements relating to my daily interactions with the phone and the various apps I most often rely on. But, again, these are all enhancements made to the operating system, which multiple older generations of iPhone models can also run. The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s A19 Pro processor simply provides an overall performance boost that users may or may not find necessary, based on how they use their phone.

On a positive note, the iPhone 17 Pro Max offers the latest tech when it comes to wireless communications via 5G cellular, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6.0. When outside a cellular service area, messages can be sent and received via satellite. 

Who Will the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Appeal To?

Based on my hands-on testing and years of experience working with iPhones, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will appeal to hardcore Apple users who are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, and who want the latest and greatest smartphone Apple has to offer. This phone will also appeal to power users needing better overall performance and longer battery life than older iPhone models. Fnally, for Android phone users looking to make the switch to an iPhone, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is a really good option, especially if you’re switching from one of the higher-end Android phones from Samsung or Google.

People upgrading from an older iPhone will likely appreciate the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s faster performance, as well as the gorgeous touchscreen and longer battery life, but those upgrading from an iPhone 16 Pro Max will notice a minimal improvement between last year’s iPhone and this latest iteration. Of course, the Pro Max series is known for its larger screen size, which means the phone itself is a bit larger and heavier than other phones in the iPhone 17 lineup, but the difference in size and weight between the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max is minimal.

I’d recommend the iPhone 17 Pro Max to users who want more on-screen real estate at their disposal (so more app-specific content can fit on the screen), or to people who use the Accessibility functions built into the operating system that allows text to be displayed in a larger size. Of course, the phone is hearing aid-compatible and works flawlessly with the Apple AirPods Pro 3 (which are the perfect wireless earbuds for this phone), as well as over-the-counter hearing aid companions.

The Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max’s Camera Setup

If you’re someone who wants the highest resolution camera setup at your disposal for capturing high-quality still images or pro-quality HD video, out of all the iPhone models, it’s the iPhone 17 Pro Max that handles content creation tasks the best. For the first time, all three rear-facing cameras offer 48MP resolution. This allows for up to 8x optical zoom or up to 40x digital zoom. Since the camera sensor built into this phone is 56% larger than that used in the iPhone 16 Pro Max, this allows the cameras to take better advantage of light, and react faster in various shooting situations.

Now, iPhone users can take higher-quality still images that showcase greater detail and more accurate color, while video content can be shot at up to 4K (120 fps) using Dolby Vision to achieve true cinematic quality. Meanwhile, the front-facing 18MP camera has also been enhanced. It provides new features, like the ability to work with the rear-facing cameras to capture video from the front and back of the iPhone at the same time.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is also the first iPhone to support the ProRES RAW file format, which gives users greater control during the editing process. Thus, serious content creators will truly appreciate the added functionality offered by the redesigned iOS 26 version of the Camera app and how well it functions with Apple’s most powerful iPhone. 

Now that I’ve had a chance to work with the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s camera system, I found it responds better in low-light situations, especially when working with Night Mode. The Camera app’s autofocus sensors respond faster, and features like Burst shooting mode are more responsive than ever before. The redesign of the Camera app is less intuitive than before, but packs a bunch of handy new photo and video-related features into the app that give users more creative control when it’s needed.

Overall, I was impressed.

My Final Thoughts: Is the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Smartphone Worth It?

Overall, the iPhone 17 Pro Max performs exactly how you’d expect. Personally, I would have liked to see more cutting-edge functionality and innovation added to the phone to further differentiate it from older iPhone models that also run iOS 26. As I’ve said, for the average user, the difference between the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max are not overwhelmingly impressive or even noticeable.

Apple still has a lot of work to do on its Apple Intelligence integration with the iPhone itself, iOS 26, the iPhone’s preinstalled apps, and Siri. But, as an iPhone user, you can always install the optional Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot+, or OpenAI app to get better use out of what AI can do while using a smartphone.

For those who are loyal to Apple, the iPhone 17 Pro Max can serve as a feature-packed communications, productivity, entertainment, organizational, health/fitness, navigation, and safety tool that will meet the smartphone needs of most advanced “power users” and content creators.

While the unibody aluminum housing is said to be durable, some users have complained about how easy it is to scratch the device. Of course, this can be prevented using a case. Personally, I am a fan of the high-quality leather cases from Mujjo, as well as the MagSafe-compatible cases from Moft, Pitaka, and Otterbox. I also love the minimalistic and futuristic design of the Arc Pulse.
