I love to get up early. My goal is usually to get up between 4:00 and 4:30, and while I don’t always accomplish it, it’s one of my favorite times of the day. In order to do this, however, I understand how important it is to get a good night’s sleep, and that’s where Nakery Beauty SkinRecovery Relax + Repair Balm comes in.

Over the years, I’ve tried out a lot of different nighttime products from eye masks to pajamas to mouth tape, and I’ve zeroed in on the things that really help me wind down and drift off to sleep as easily as possible.

When I received Nakery Beauty’s SkinRecovery Relax + Repair Body Balm with Magnesium + Melatonin, I was excited to try it and see how it affected my sleep.

The Ingredients

First of all, this balm is infused with magnesium chloride, melatonin, and retinol and smells incredible. According to Nakery Beauty’s founder Liz Folce, these and the other ingredients, including valerian root and chamomile are encapsulated, which means the balm soaks into your skin and the encapsulated ingredients are time-released throughout the night, rather than just rubbing off on the sheets when you climb into bed.

Magnesium chloride, she says, is responsible for helping manage stress, anxiety, headaches, migraines, sore muscles, restless legs and charley horses, but many of us are deficient. Topical application of magnesium chloride, according to Health, may support sleep and relaxation and can regulate melatonin and cortisol levels.

The formula also includes cocoa butter, mango butter, and shea butter to help soften and moisturize skin to prevent wrinkles and help create firmer skin. It also contains caffeine which helps boost circulation and combat cellulite. (But don’t worry, it won’t keep you up).

Clinical Trials and Consumer Opinions

Liz pointed out that when you use the Relax + Repair balm, “you’re not just getting a sleep cream. You’re getting something that’s a double whammy. If you have sagging skin, it’s clinically proven to lift, firm, and tighten saggy skin.” When they did clinical and consumer testing, Liz said that both the clinicals and the consumer opinions came back at 100% for people who agreed that “it lifted their sagging skin, that their skin was firmer, their skin was tighter, because of this great complex that’s in here of SepiLift and retinol.”

Application

The instructions on the Nakery website say to gently rub the balm into all areas of the body from neck to toe prior to sleeping. I put it on right before bed and usually already have my pjs on, so I put it on my feet and then rub it into my chest and neck.

My Experience

I should caveat my experience with the Relax + Repair Balm with the fact that I don’t have trouble sleeping. My sleep schedule is fairly consistent, and I typically go to bed between 9:30 and 10:00 and wake up between 4:30 and 5:00. I don’t struggle with insomnia or any other sleep disorders.

That said, I still really enjoy using the balm before I go to bed at night, but I’m not sure how much it helps my sleep specifically. I noticed the biggest difference when I was pairing the balm with Wholesome Story Myo & D-Chiro Inositol. When I took the inositol and used the balm, I definitely felt like I had a deeper sleep than I typically do, and I was waking up very easily right at 4:00 which is my target wake up time.

The balm smells amazing and has a lovely texture, so I love the ritual of getting into bed and rubbing it into my feet, chest, and neck. The skin on my chest and neck feels firm, which could be attributed to using the balm — though I put a slew of other products on before bed and when I wake up.

In our conversation, Liz said she loves the balm because “it doesn’t leave you groggy. Your skin feels amazing because you still get all the skin care benefits,” and I can attest to both of these things.

Pro tip: When you think it’s gone, remove the lid and squeeze directly from the tube. I keep thinking it’s going to run out, but I’m always able to get more!
