I pack as light as possible. I’m talking 15 to 20 pounds neatly tucked into my 30-liter REI backpack, and nothing else. When I booked a month-long trip to Japan that would span March and April, I knew I needed a warm layer to keep me warm on windy days or chilly nights. But I also didn’t want something bulky that would take up tons of space in my bag.
While preparing for my trip, I had the opportunity to review one of Patagonia’s lightest-weight fleece hoodies, which the brand considers a mid-layer. It seemed perfect for my goals, but did it become my new favorite travel hoody?

First Impressions: How Is This Fleece So Small?
When my Patagonia package arrived, I thought they’d sent me the wrong item. The soft envelope was so small that I didn’t think it could possibly contain the fleece I planned to live in for warmth in Japan. Of course, I was wrong. The R1 Air really is just that small.
Materials
Patagonia is well known for using durable materials that are designed to last forever. The brand prides themselves on making items that can be passed down for generations while also producing in Fair Trade Certified factories. Because of this, I had high expectations about the material.
The R1 Air Fleece is made with 100% recycled polyester. It’s a zig-zag jacquard material that gives this fleece a unique look. In between the zig-zags is a thinner polyester that’s transparent, adding to the lightweight feel.
The fleece has two zipped side pockets and one zipped chest pocket for small items like a driver’s license or debit card.
Care
It’s easy and simple to care for the R1 Air Fleece. It’s suitable for machine washing in cold water without bleach. You can pop it in the dryer on a low setting, but I always went with air drying since it easily dried overnight.
What I Loved About The Patagonia R1 Air Fleece
I put the Patagonia fleece on the moment I unpacked, and from then on, I hardly ever took it off. I wore it on my 11-hour flight to Japan, wore it all day and night while walking around, and even slept with it on during a cold night in a hotel with a tricky heating system.
I found the R1 Fleece to be so comfortable that I didn’t really want to take it off. It’s somehow incredibly warm for being so thin, but it’s also breathable. I never got the feeling I was wearing a plastic-y shell that made me sticky with sweat.
I loved the three pockets on the fleece, as well. The chest pocket was the permanent home for my train card, so I never misplaced it during my trip. The side pockets were wonderful for my phone and headphones. I also adore the cozy hood which was perfect for red-eye flights. Plus, the entire fleece is thin enough that it was no issue to put a rain shell on over the fleece on rainy days.
I also loved how quickly the fleece dried. If I washed it in the evening after a day exploring Japan and hung it up to dry, it was ready to go the next morning. Since this was my only warm layer, being able to wash and dry it overnight was a major requirement and it passed with ease.
What I Didn’t Love About The Patagonia R1 Air Fleece
It took less than a week for my Patagonia R1 Air Fleece to start pilling. On the Smolder Blue colorway I chose, the pilling is hardly noticeable unless looking at it from inches away. The pilling doesn’t bother me, and the comfort and functionality of the fleece mean more to me that it staying in perfectly pristine condition. But it’s undeniable the material seems prone to pilling. If that’s a dealbreaker for you, this might not be the right mid-layer fleece.
Who Should Buy The Patagonia R1 Air Fleece?
After wearing the fleece nearly non-stop for over a month, I think the Patagonia R1 Air Fleece is a great option for those who pack light like myself. It packs down beautifully and would be a great layer for all-day adventures or if you’re worried it’ll get cold once the sun goes down.
Is The Fleece Worth The $200 Price?
Given that Patagonia clothing is known to last for decades, I think dishing out $200 for a fleece that’s useful in all seasons could be worth it for some people. I’ve worn the fleece nearly everyday since I got it. If you’re someone who prefers to have a few excellent clothing items that serve plenty of function, the R1 Air is a solid option.
Patagonia also has an incredible option to buy used clothing called Worn Wear. The brand buys back clothing folks don’t need anymore and sells it at a discount. That could be an option if you have your heart set on the R1 Air but don’t want to pay the $199 retail price.

At the time of writing in April 2026, some colorways in limited sizes were on sale at REI for $93.83, so it’s possible to find the fleece at a discount if you’re not in a rush.
Personally, I loved living in the R1 Air Fleece in Japan, and I plan to take it along on upcoming travel. It’s made the cut as one of the only clothing items worthy of a spot in my small backpack.
