I’m always on the lookout for the breakout scent of the season and I recently discovered this interesting offering from United Arab Emirates-based perfumer Rasasi. Although Rasasi isn’t a household name in the United States, they’ve been in the fragrance business since 1979, and with a large lineup of scents and affordable prices, I wanted to give one of their bottles a try. A fruity and fresh scent was on my wishlist, so after a bit of research, I picked up a bottle of Wood Excess Pour Homme to see if lived up to expectations.

First Impressions
At a glance, Wood Excess would make for a sleek gift with its classy black box and array of geometric golden markings. The bottle itself sports a timeless black and glossy bronze colorway, and a subtle crescent shape hidden by its straight lines. Its polished bonze cap holds securely in place and a single powerful spritz of its atomizer delivers exactly the amount of Wood Excess the average user would need to get though the day.
Fruity Intro
What really hooked me onto giving Wood Excess a try was its promise of pineapple and citrus top notes, and it absolutely delivers, for a short while at least. I loved the bold smell of freshly cut pineapple with a subtle hint of bergamot citrus; it was exactly what I was hoping for, and while it appealed to my tastes, this fruity aroma doesn’t last particularly long. The introductory fruity traces of Wood Excess dissipate after 15 to 20 minutes, however its core tones are appealing in their own way.
Long-Lasting Sweet Floral
Once the initial wave of tropical fruit quickly disappeared, it was replaced with a sweet bouquet of flowers for the rest of the day. The true core of Wood Excess is two parts that have merged perfectly together: one part fragrant flowerbed with easily identifiable traces of orange blossom and rose, and one part influenced by all-natural sweetness from honey, warm caramel, and vanilla. Wood Excess sports a fragrance reminiscent of the innate sweet-green combo of a honeysuckle bush in full bloom and it works surprisingly well as a signature smell that feels fresh and floral.
I appreciated that Wood Excess easily lingers for over eight hours, making it a great option for anyone looking for a daily signature scent that’ll easily hang around from the time you leave home to when you get back from the office. Another element of Wood Excess I liked was how its balanced strength was confident and attention-grabbing without being overbearing.

Final Thoughts
Although I liked it overall, there are a few oddball notes I have to share: I cannot figure out why this model is called “Wood Excess,” when there isn’t a hint of woody, tree-like, etc in its composition. Also, I thought it was strange that this male-focused fragrance included a comprehensive guide for Rasasi’s female scents.
Wood Excess may not have been the fruity scent I was hunting for, but did become my go-to floral, yet very sweet fragrance. It’s long-lasting, very flowery and sweet, and surprisingly affordable to boot.
