Vitamin C serums can seriously brighten dull skin, but often come with a hefty price tag. Skin & Co’s mixed up the typical C formula with vegan squalane, hyaluronic and ascorbic acids to try to make skin more luminous. Can it measure up to my go-to product?

Brighten and Tighten?

Sicilian Light’s Brightening Serum caught my eye not just because it had vitamin C for brightening, but also squalane, and a number of other features. On the label, it says it has prickly pear, blood orange, and truffle and while those are all delicious, I wasn’t sure if it was a deflection. It was time to try something new, so gourmet ingredients aside, it seemed to have the stuff I wanted, promising luminous and plump skin.
My Experience
I was surprised by the smell. Judging by the name, I was expecting a bright citrus scent, so I was surprised by the floral, almost powdery scent to it. There was also a slight hint of some spice, but no trace of the blood orange, pear, or truffle whatsoever. Not that I bought it for the scent, but it took me by surprise. The serum itself actually looks like a semi-liquid moisturizer, a gooey white whereas the vitamin C serums I typically purchase are transparent or tinged with yellow. It spread easily and wasn’t greasy, and after a moment it felt like I hadn’t even put anything on my skin.
And most days, I just didn’t notice it in my routine. It would absorb quickly, settle in, and I’d put on my makeup. Some days, however, my skin took on a bit of a sticky cast and when I’d rub my finger on my skin, some residue and excess skin would come away. Was this exfoliating me, too? It wasn’t a nice, fresh exfoliant feel, so I think it may have some buildup. Not crazy about that.

The Verdict
I’d find another vitamin C serum. If you’re not in the market for something pricey, I also like the Paula’s Choice Vitamin C boost in a pinch. This was a watery, milky serum that didn’t seem to make any kind of difference on my skin, and occasionally made my skin a bit sticky and residual. Gonna pass on this next time!
